"The Mistress of Spices" charms.

I picked this DVD up at Walmart because I like Arishwarya Rai so much. I was plesantly surprised at the simplicity and sweetness of the film. Arishwarya plays the lovely Tilo, a young woman who learned she had special abilities as a child, and was taught to listen to the spices by the First Mother, who also laid down the rules: she must never step foot outside the door of the spice shop, and she must never touch another's skin. She lives her whole life in the spice shop, always looking to serve others and never lives life as her own desires would dictate. Her gifts bring happiness and health to many people, but as time goes on and she sees happy couple after happy couple touching and laughing, she becomes unhappy in her solitude. She meets a young man, and falls in love with him, but the spices turn against her, and do exactly the opposite of what she wishes them to. She finds she must make a choice between the man and the spices, but she wants to keep them both. She decides to take one night with this man for herself, and then return to her homeland and the spices forever. The ending isn't very surprising, since romantic dramas are fairly predictable, but it is an enjoyable movie, and Arishwarya is sweet, kind-hearted, charming, exotic and beautiful. Great film for a rainy day with your significant other!
