The mission is a great movie that shows you many sides of human heart. It shows the very best in men and the worst. This movie is one of my all time favorites because it challenges me to consider what things in life I carry that can only be removed by someone elses grace. It also shows that the often dreadful work and duty of life when accepted, tho difficult and painful leads to true life and purpose. This movie brings into sharp contrast religion vs righteousness. The fact that this story is based on actual historical events, make it even more compelling.

  A true Epic
Review created: 05/26/09

There are many reasons to own this movie, mainly the fact that you will want to watch it again and again. It is one of few movies that will get your mind thinking for days. The dialogue is pretty sparse, but the music, imagery, and intensity of the characters tell the story. Now, to clear up a few problems I saw in previous reviews: It was filmed in Brazil with the incredible water fall scenes being at Iguazu Falls. The tribe of natives is the Guarani, a people that still live in the area to this day. It is a tragic film that will be too much for some people, but it's a story that needs to be told, and the "good" characters inspire some much needed hope.

The Mission, Two Disk Special Edition

I decided to buy this movie after listening to parts of the soundtrack that I had previously downloaded on my Ipod, I love Ennio Morricone's music.

Well this movie far exceeded any of my expectations. It is one of the best movies I have seen. I watched it twice the first day I received it and it seems to get better each time I view it. The musical score is very moving, so much so that I immediately purchased the completer CD Soundtrack. I guess I will have to find the book next!!

I highly recommend this movie (and the Original CD Soundtrack)......Phillip

  Amazing Movie!
Review created: 03/08/09

This movie is one of my all time favorites. I typically don't go for serious flicks (I'm a comedy gal), but this movie is so moving - it is a must see. It speaks to the power of music while making you think about ethical dilemmas in religion - but it is in no way as boring as that may sound! It is based on a true story and you can enjoy it for its gripping tale as well as the fantastic scenery without getting academic if you like. Just watch this one - you won't forget it!
*As an aside - if you are a musician or music lover you will probably fall in love with "Gabriel's oboe", the song that Father Gabriel first plays when surrounded by the Guarani. Yo-Yo Ma has rearranged this for cello and plays it beautifully on several of his recordings.

First saw the film in high school and I had to have it. Viewing it five years later, it is every bit as fantastic as the first time. The type of film you would watch as a viewing event and not just some movie.

  Stunning.

Moving, uplifting, inspiring; historically accurate account of the slave trade in South America, and one man's journey from feared hunter of men through his epiphany and restoration. Everyone needs to watch this movie about once a year to remind us all what goodness, forgivenes, and mercy look like, and to remind us that it is never too late to do the right thing.

I came across the music for this film and loved Gabriels Oboe. Wanting to know it fit into the movie I watched a couple of clips on You Tube. I decided to watch the movie. E-Bay, of course was able to help me purchase the DVD at a more reasonable cost. The movie was a bit predictable as the history behind it goes but the scenes were awesome. It makes me want to visit South AMerica "above the falls".

I saw the movie several years ago and regret not buying it. I figured if I could get it anywhere, it would be on ebay and I certainly wasn't disappointed. I love the story, the actors and scenery. I've watched it several times since I bought it will again in the future. It's just one of those movies that I think stick with you.

I bought this movie because I saw it many years ago at a theater and really liked it. Rarely do I buy movies, but this is one I wanted to share with others. It is a true story with story lines that touch you deeply and may inspire you to try to make amends for the wrongs you may have done to others. What I did not like about it.....not much except the saddness I felt. Great movie!

A wonderful historical production of the atrocities done by the Spanish/Portugese and Church on the native peoples of South America. Filmed in some of the most beautiful jungles of South America. Brilliant acting by DeNero and Irons.

  The Mission

One of DeNiro's best performances, this is a highly overlooked epic classic with great performances by both DeNiro and Jeromy Irons.
DeNiro is sinister as a slave Indian trader forced to look in the mirror when he's imprisoned for killing his brother in a drunken rage over a girl they both loved. Irons is a priest who's mission is to convert the Indian population in a remote village. He offers DeNiro a chance at redemption by allowing him to assist him with the converts, the very same people he sold and enslaved. The endeaver frees his soul and he finds peace with himself until the Monarchy decide not to support Irons cause and begins a full assault to enslave the Indians once again. Now DeNiro finds himself training and fighting along side the Indians, those same people he once hunted. (Sound like a recent Tom Cruise Movie anyone?).
Beautifully filmed in what looked like Peru, this film will be greatly enjoyed on a large widescreen T.V. with a background of waterfalls and crisp green jungles.

  The Mission
Review created: 01/08/07

The Mission is a film that we had long wanted to have in our movie library. It is an epic type film that tells not only a story of history, but one of forgiveness and liberation of one whose lifestyle was to place others in bondage. Its beautiful and awe-inspiring locations are "real", no CGI here. The tale is both tragic and inspiring, and one worth viewing again.

  One of our top 10
Review created: 10/06/06

This movie did not get a lot of press but the message of the movie is great. A life is changed from mercenary to mission worker. He carries his guilt on his back (literally) and will not let go of it until one of those he sinned against cuts it loose. We loved this movie. It is mainly a story of one man and redemption. My husband, who has preached for 30 years now, used a scene from the movie in a sermon to illustrate forgiveness.

The Mission is not to miss!
Review created: 08/04/06

First reason to buy the film was the musical score. The best reason to buy this film is that it's a stirring, wonderful story of native South Americans in the colonial period. The Jesuits should be proud! Actors were so compelling. I sure missed seeing this in the 80's when it first was produced.

  Review of DVD The Mission
Review created: 07/05/06

The Mission, as a movie, transports the viewer into a new vision of life. The basic change is an understanding of getting out of one's own narcissistic box and finding energy to live a high set of values. The transposition of values is not one-to-one, that is, doing what we see. Rather, the movie provides an example to be translated into one' own little world, living in a way to leave the planet a better place, regardless of one's personal belief system.
I am hyper-critical of movies generally. As a teacher and worker with youth, I have used The Mission dozens of times for teaching/discussion. Youth respond vigoroulsy to the experience. What to say? There is adventure, drama, suspended animation of emotions and stunning photography. If I were to rate the movie on a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it an 11.
