Synopsis Author Stephen White takes aim at the media frenzy surrounding high-profile crimes in the 13th Alan Gregory thriller. Planning to attend a conference in Las Vegas, psychologist Alan Gregory visits the office of social worker Hannah Green, who had agreed to cover his patients in his absence, only to find her dead body. Her inexplicable death is followed by the disappearance of one of her clients, 14-year-old Mallory, who, as her childhood friend (i.e., JonBenet Ramsey, although her name is never specifically used in the book) did eight years ago, vanishes from her Boulder home on Christmas Day. As Alan attempts to find answers for what seems initially to be two unconnected events, other people linked to Mallory disappear as well.

Industry Reviews "[G]ets off to a fast start....[A]s usual the author, himself a psychologist, uses his professional knowledge to paint a convincing backdrop of the world of clinical practice." Publishers Weekly (12/06/2004)
"While White draws his characters with an uncommon depth and richness for the mystery genre, he paints no character better than the city of Boulder itself....Another fine addition to a popular series." Booklist (12/15/2004)
