Industry Reviews A member of the Society for American Baseball Research, Debs (Still Standing After All These Years, LJ 2/1/96) tells 12 tales of baseball players who attempted to break established records but barely missed. Among the stories is that of Nolan Ryan and the 12 one-hit games he pitched. Another account covers Ted Williams's unsuccessful quest to be the first player to pull off a third Triple Crown (i.e., lead his league in batting average, home-runs, and RBIs for a third full season). Debs explains each record being assaulted, gives background on the time period and the players involved, then covers the unsuccessful attempt to break the record. A good purchase for libraries that collect baseball history or where there is interest in the statistical aspect of the National Pastime. Terry Jo Madden, Boise State Univ. Lib., ID Kakutani
