"Budo" and "Little Melonae" were recorded in New York City on October 27, 1955. Tracks 1-5 recorded at The Newport Jazz Festival on July 4, 1958; these tracks were previously released on MILES AND COLTRANE AT NEWPORT.
Includes liner notes by Jeff Rosen.
Most of MILES AND COLTRANE was recorded live at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, with the addition of 1955's "Little Melonae" and "Budo." The record is ebullient, bubbling over with energy, and it showcases the contrast between Davis' spare, intense coolness and Coltrane's intricacy, limber sense of time, and passionate tone. The difference is striking, but rarely are the two musicians out of sync.
Especially fabulous is "Bye Bye Blackbird," which allows Davis to show off his talent for turning a simple theme into a complex improvisation using one variation after another. The theme is picked up seamlessly by Coltrane, who precedes each note with his trademark blasts of sound, bringing the tune increasingly far away from the original melody. The inclusion of the 1955 sessions highlights Coltrane's evolution away from straight-ahead bebop toward a new intensity and a bold, complex new rhythmic sense.
