  The "bearded years" of McManus
Review created: 04/18/08

Never before and never again would Elvis Costello travel the lonesome path of "new wave troubador" as he did here on 1991's MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE. Having spent much of the past year hanging out and writing songs with his new buddy,
Paul McCartney, Elvis doned hippie hair and a ratty beard to show what a true reborn rebel he was. Fed up with Warner Brothers' non-interest in what he was up to, Elvis branched out on Beach Boys styled "The Other Side of Summer" and
the other masterpiece "So Like Candy". With his prior lp "Spike" still sitting by idle in record stores, Elvis flung these fourteen new songs into out faces.
The album is partly dark and more sinister because the listener asks themselves, "Who is this stranger feeding me this?!?!"

One, Declan McManus that's all.
