Apes Better Movies But Still Mindless Fun
Review created: 10/06/09(updated 10/08/09)

Well, Something Weird Video has done it again, digging up another collection of cool crap from moviedom's dark, stairless basement.
First on the bill is "The Mighty Gorga", the lowest budget rip-off of "King Kong" that was ever unleashed on the viewing public.
I mean they could only find HALF a gorilla suit, so you only see the title terror from the waist up!
And the Tyrannosaurus Rex he fights?
It's a plastic puppet, & I don't mean a stop motion puppet but an honest to gosh HAND PUPPET!
(There IS a brief bit of stop motion but it's a scene stolen from the Italian muscleman movie "Goliath & the Dragon"...)
To top that off the movie is filmed in various California zoos & wildlife parks (one of which has a REAL gorilla on display which only makes the shaggy fake-furred, ping pong ball-eyed Gorga look even phonier!) rather than anything that looks even close to a real jungle.
There's only one black actor in the entire movie (the rest of the natives are played by white actors in INDIAN make-up!), & the closest this film gets to Africa is the fact that the leading lady was born in Rhodesia.
As for said actress, she's certainly attractive but in an odd, overly made-up way with the type of face you can only find nowadays in old family photos from the sixties & seventies (she looks like Elizabeth Taylor & Bette Davis had a kid together!).
Not that she's bad in the part. In fact all of the actors are pretty good all things considered, giving their old-fashioned best to their roles & playing them straight & sincere.
Unfortunately, they're in the same position as the cast in the classic bad movie "The Giant Claw", obviously filming their scenes with the blind faith that the special effects were going to be good or at least adequate but probably ended up trying to crawl under their seats in embarrassment when they went to the movie premiere on opening night & found out what sort of amateurish abomination had their names on the poster.
Now I know it sounds like I'm criticizing here, but I'm not.
These are actually the reasons I LOVE this picture, & if you have a weakness for bad monster movies, you can't do worse (or better!) than "The Mighty Gorga", & it is certainly suitable enough to show to kids if they have a high enough boredom threshold.
Pity you can't say the same for it's co-feature which is out & out softcore pornography.
An x-rated caveman comedy written by the late, great Ed Wood, this is probably the real reason most people would buy this disc, & the dialogue certainly shows the master's...unique take on the English language.
The uninhibited actresses spend most of their time running around naked in all their shall we say...'unprocessed' natural glory while the men keep their over-sized fake fur loincloths on even during their most intimate moments.
The dinosaur puppet from "Mighty Gorga" returns in all its lame grandeur to menace the cast throughout the film, & there is also a guy in a gorilla suit that one could say at least looks better than the one Gorga wore if weren't for the fact that it rips down the back & shows the pink flesh beneath whenever he carries off an unclothed cave girl.
The disc comes with the usual cool extras you always get from Something Weird including a couple of sexy shorts & a poster/radio ad reel, but the real treat is an Easter egg featuring ace animator Dave Allen's classic Volkswagen commercial that recreated the end of "King Kong" in full color.
It's a little lost treasure worth buying the DVD for alone.
