A Profound Performance By The Legendary Peter Cushing
Review created: 08/13/07
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Long before the bloody splatter films that pose as horror were produced, Amicus Productions of the United Kingdom brought together an amazing cast and created an atmospheric, creepy classic based on the comic books of old. The year was 1972, and the cast included the legendary Peter Cushing, the beautiful Joan Collins, the creepy Crypt Keeper Sir Ralph Richardson and a host of Britain's finest acting talent, resulting in a classic that still stands above all the CRYPT movies that followed it.
Award-winning Cinematographer and Director Freddie Francis directed this highly effective anthology of five stories, linked together in impressive fashion by Sir Ralph Richardson as the Keeper of the Crypt. The stories are taut and creepy and the acting and direction could not be better. Particularly profound is the sequence featuring Peter Cushing, in what I believe to have been of his finest performances.
Also included on this Double Feature DVD from MGM Midnite Movies is VAULT OF HORROR (1973), the follow-up from Amicus Productions in which five men trapped in the basement vault of an office building share visions with each other of their demise. Vampires, bodily dismemberment, east Indian mysticism, an insurance scam, and an artist who kills by painting his victims' deaths are all included in the Vault Of Horror.

These horror classics are two of our favorites at Movie Magic USA. Get out the popcorn and get set for creepy fun!

Tales From the Crypt (1972) and Vault of Horror
Review created: 02/21/09

To begin, I must say how difficult this title has been to find. Anyone you ask about Tales From the Crypt thinks only of the lovable skeletal crypt dwelling fiend that has given us many laughs over the years. Hardly anyone even knows about this movie. I saw it once when I was a kid , and was most terrified.
A small group of would-be criminals enters an underground cave exhibit to find that there is of course, no way out. Then, a scary old man in a tattered brown robe appears to educate them each individually on why they are all going to Hell. The stories, despite a PG rating, are remarkably horrifying. And All Through the House, is one of my favorites, it can be seen redone with a TV-MA rating on season 1 of HBO's Tales. The blood and violence scenes are quite cheesy, but this being a film from 1972 England, not too much should be expected.
The tales are rather deep, giving one that "pit of your stomach" feeling of dread and remorse for the characters, even the bad guys.
If you're looking for some grotesque, horror/thriller, then this title is not for you. However, if you're like me, and also enjoy what Scary minus the blood, gore, harsh language, and nudity can be, then you will enjoy this movie, guaranteed.
I haven't written anything about Vault of Horror because it's pretty much the same exact movie as Tales From the Crypt, only the people tell their own tales as opposed to having a finger pointed at them by a scary old man.

  8 TIMES THE HORROR
Review created: 01/18/09
by:

Four anthologies in Tales from the Crypt, taken from the old EC comicsof the same name. These are some of the stories bringing about the controversal comics ban during the `50's. Excellent classic horror stories. The description for Vault of Horror is the same, giving a total of eight tales of horror. View with the lights out, for a chilling gothic effect. A must have for fans of horror.

This two movies are one of the first horror films that i saw on TV in the '80s. After that, I make the impossible to buy, but was very difficult to bring it. After that, I was looking for it in DVD format, and finally, they are in this great edition, with subtitles, spanish&english spoken and with that littles cut scenes that in TV never appear.

This is horror done right. Remember back in the day where you didn't see gore as the idea of horror or torture for 10 hours as scary? Well, these two movies are classic movies and are must haves of the"Hammer is horror" genre.

Creepy Nasty Fun In Vein Of EC Classics.
Review created: 04/09/08

Amazing 2 movies, held true to the tradition of EC books of the 50s. Truly chilling anthologies with that beautiful twist endinds. These stories preceded the great shows such as Hitchcock Presents, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits. The stories were so aweful that a special comics code was started to try and stop the comic book people from turning our youth into criminals. These stories were truly appalling for the time. The movies kept the same flavor of the original stories from Tales From The Crypt and Vault Of Horror. I'm a true fan and really love these movies. 2 for the price of 1 you can't beat the price, also, there is 2 seperate discs, not one 2 side disc. AAAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++++!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old EC entertainment alive and well!
Review created: 01/29/08

A very nice duo of horror show sets that definatly inspired the popular Tales from the Crypt series of the 90s. Well casted and composited, I give Tales a B+ and Vault a B-.

  These films are edited
Review created: 01/25/08

I was salivating when I purchased this DVD set. I love old horror movies and could not wait to see these on my widescreen.
You can imagine my disappointment in watching the movies as these are not the films that I had seen on late night television.
To have the films preserved on DVD is cool, as they are some weird stories and deserve to be remembered. Excellent performances and cheesy effects make the stories cool.

BE WARNED!!!

These movies are edited. I saw these movies on Joe Bob Briggs late night TNT show a few years back. In those versions, there was plenty of blood and guts. In these versions, there are parts of the screen that are, literally, blacked out. As if they are going to be shown on the ABC family channel or something.
In doing so, it takes away from the "Punch in the Gut" the EC comic stories are supposed to put across.

If you don't mind that..enjoy.

If you are a true fan of horror movies like I am....you will be annoyed.
