Finally, I am reviewing a book of 75 pages of Adrienne Rich's poems (instead of her prose). These poems are extremely intimate and autobiographical. Rich reveals so much about her own life, including about being a political activist.
What's most intriguing about Rich's poems about herself is that she "assume[s] a theater of voices" instead of a singular "I." Doing so has left me still wondering "why?" Rich has entitled her book of poems, "Midnight Salvage" because she considers what she has 'salvaged' are recollections from fears and violence.
Rich's poety includes topics about desire & love, being a body & present in it, a more global view of history's mean-spiritedness and the beauty radiating throughout nature.
This time, I believe Rich's readers will be surprised by specific presences who she brings forth with her into poetry. What will not be surprising is that they are considered radicals & revolutionaries. But, by so doing, the 70 year old Adrienne Rich proves that she's every bit as much a daring, cutting edge, political social activist as ever!~
