Midnight Lace - Alfred Hitchcock/Doris Day Thriller
Review created: 10/06/06

I am a great fan of the actress Doris Day. Our family has always loved watching her warm, funny, light-hearted romantic comedies. In this movie, Doris Day plays quite the opposite role (a woman who feels she is being watched and threatened by an unknown being who only she has had contact with), but she performs just as well as in her light comedies, showing her true qualities as a consummate actress, in my opinion. If you enjoy the strange twists and ever-increasing suspense that Hitchcock movies always take, then you will greatly enjoy this murder mystery performance starring two superb stars.

This movie was made early 1962. I decided to buy the movie because it was one of my favorites and I could never find it on TV. I think the last time it was televised was the early 80's. Also, the purchase came so quickly. The quality was very good, had no problem with it. Even got my 24 year old daughter to watch it with me and she loved it.

My wife loves that movie, but I was a little worried...

My wife is a Doris Day fan and loves all Hitchcock movies and has quite a few of both except this one. So, that's the reason I bought it.

My worry came when I didn't get it in a timely manner. Even after a few emails to the seller, which weren't returned at first. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought they must've run into some problem on their end.

Then, after about a week or so of the continual emails to them, I got a response saying that they were sending the movie. I was relieved. I left a positive feedback after receiving and reviewing the movie because it was in good condition and I was just glad to get it.

So, to be honest in this assessment I'd still leave a positive feedback because I DID get my item, but it'll have to be a low one for the non-communication in the beginning.

Other than "Gone With The Wind," this is by far my pick for the Doris Day movies, and I've not seen one film that I didn't think she was fantastic. This one is out of character for her.........the light-hearted comedies were wonderful, but this film shows she can rival any drama and suspense actresses. I give it a 5~~~~~~~~~~~a MUST see.

Great Thriller almost Hitchcock in nature. Being a Ross Hunter production, the sets are lavish and Doris Day never looked better. Don't miss this one!

  A Great Doris Day Movie
Review created: 10/15/09

I have enjoyed the movies of Doris Day for many years. She is America's sweetheart and her films are always entertaining as well as being of a quality that the entire family can enjoy.

Midnight Lace is quite different from the movies we generally expect to see from Ms. Day. Known for her musicals and romantic comedies, this movie is a complete departure from those types of films and was a surprise the first time I saw it.

Ms. Day plays the role of Kit Preston, a wealthy American who has been married for three months to a British businessman. The movie opens with her walking through a London park in a heavy fog and hearing a high-pitched voice threaten to kill her. In a panic, she runs home and is calmed by her husband who convinces her that the incident was just someone's idea of a practical joke.

But it is not a joke. Kit begins receiving phone calls from her mysterious tormentor and as time passes, she becomes increasingly frightened and in fear for her life. To make matters worse, the police and her family appear to have doubts about whether her story is even true. No one has heard any of the phone calls and they begin to think that she is either making up the incidents as a way to get attention or that she is suffering from some type of mental condition.

We the audience can see that these things are actually happening to Kit, and there is a long list of possible suspects who might be trying to frighten or even harm her.

I gave this movie a rating of "excellent". It has a great storyline and Doris Day is quite believable as we watch her character being pushed to the brink of a nervous breakdown. The rest of the cast including Rex Harrison, Myrna Loy, Roddy McDowall, and John Gavin are also quite good. This movie has plenty of suspense and a surprise ending.

I have wanted to own this movie for several years. As of the time of this review (October, 2009), Midnight Lace was not available in the U.S. on DVD. I purchased a VHS from Ebay and am glad that I did. The copy I received was in excellent condition, so I will be able to enjoy this movie for many years.

I hope you find this review helpful.

This movie shows the real meaning of the word "thriller". Doris Day gives a memorable performance as a tormented "victim" to a faceless voice. It will keep you guessing to the end. To see the beautiful outfits worn by Doris Day is worth watching the movie alone. You will not be disappointed in this one!!!

Midnight Lace I forgot just how good this movie was.
Review created: 10/25/08

I love to watch mysteries. Both Doris Day and Rex Harrison always give a great performance. I remembered that I enjoyed this movie and it wasn`t available on Amazon which I feel is a very good place to shop. I found a video online and was lucky enough to get it. If you can find a copy buy it. Also Myrna Loy and Herbert Marshall are also in this movie it`s aleays great to see the old masters at work.
