A Great Doris Day Movie

I have enjoyed the movies of Doris Day for many years. She is America's sweetheart and her films are always entertaining as well as being of a quality that the entire family can enjoy.
Midnight Lace is quite different from the movies we generally expect to see from Ms. Day. Known for her musicals and romantic comedies, this movie is a complete departure from those types of films and was a surprise the first time I saw it.
Ms. Day plays the role of Kit Preston, a wealthy American who has been married for three months to a British businessman. The movie opens with her walking through a London park in a heavy fog and hearing a high-pitched voice threaten to kill her. In a panic, she runs home and is calmed by her husband who convinces her that the incident was just someone's idea of a practical joke.
But it is not a joke. Kit begins receiving phone calls from her mysterious tormentor and as time passes, she becomes increasingly frightened and in fear for her life. To make matters worse, the police and her family appear to have doubts about whether her story is even true. No one has heard any of the phone calls and they begin to think that she is either making up the incidents as a way to get attention or that she is suffering from some type of mental condition.
We the audience can see that these things are actually happening to Kit, and there is a long list of possible suspects who might be trying to frighten or even harm her.
I gave this movie a rating of "excellent". It has a great storyline and Doris Day is quite believable as we watch her character being pushed to the brink of a nervous breakdown. The rest of the cast including Rex Harrison, Myrna Loy, Roddy McDowall, and John Gavin are also quite good. This movie has plenty of suspense and a surprise ending.
I have wanted to own this movie for several years. As of the time of this review (October, 2009), Midnight Lace was not available in the U.S. on DVD. I purchased a VHS from Ebay and am glad that I did. The copy I received was in excellent condition, so I will be able to enjoy this movie for many years.
