Best Music and Movie Combo... far surpasses iPod

The Zune 120 is my favorite media player so far, and I have owned several, especially iPods. I will tell you the pros and cons of it in simple form below:

Pros:
Very Large Screen (slightly smaller than iPod Touch, near x2 iPod Classic)
Excellent for Videos
Good for pictures
Large album artwork
Custom backgrounds
Easy responsive navigation with touch and button press Zune Pad
TV Output (Navigate menus, view pictures, watch videos, listen to music on TV!)
Great sound quality
Very clear FM tuner (which tells track names on stations that broadcast info)
Zune PC software is excellent, simple, fast, (I prefer over iTunes)
Wireless built in
Interact with other Zunes (share music with limitations, send pictures)
Shop the Marketplace on the Zune, even sample music
Zune Pass subscription monthly fee for unlimited music if desired
Great look and design to the Zune, very sturdy
Body doesn't show scratches much
Microsoft constantly updates firmware, adding new features, even for old outdated Zune users
Wireless Sync option
VERY FAST, gapless playback

Cons:
Not Mac compatible, PC ONLY
Battery Life, though good, weaker than iPod Classic's
Screen hard to see in sunlight
Limited accessory support
Though screen is large, resolution is low (same resolution as iPod Classic's)
Wireless features not very useful without Zune Pass subscription or nearby friends that own Zunes to interact with
Game support, though growing, is very weak

As you can see, the pros much outweigh the cons. I really enjoy watching movies that I converted from my DVD collection on the Zune. The Zune Pad offers a fun way to navigate

Although the Zune 120 and 80 models are aimed to compete with the iPod Classic, they can still beat the iPod touch line for the superior memory capacity at a much lower price, which is what you want if you plan to store many movies on it. The iPod Classic is very sluggish and unresponsive with controls at points, but I find the Zune to always be zippy.

One more bit for you: If you're debating over the Zune 80 or the Zune 120, it pretty much comes down to a small difference in cost and what you want since they are both exactly the same measurements in physical size. First, the 80 has a matte metal front faceplate, while the 120 has a glossy plastic front. Personally, I prefer the glossy plastic. Also, the 80 has a silver ring around the Zune Pad but the 120 has a black ring (also I prefer this). Finally, the 80 has a matte metal silver back, but the 120 has a black matte metal back. Don't forget that there is also a less common red Zune option for both the 80 and 120 models

If this review helped you, please click yes. Thanks for reading! I know you'll enjoy your Zune as much as I do!

I finally broke down and decided to buy an mp3 player. I've never blindly bought into the hype of the iPod, so I compared the Zune 120 to the iPod Classic and there were a couple of features on the Zune that won me over.

Positives:
Most importantly, song playback sounds great. Interface is easy to navigate with the touch pad. I love that you can change your background picture. Album artwork is actually visible on the screen compared to the iPod and overall the screen is much larger. Displaying pictures and videos in landscape proportions look fantastic. The 5 games that come free are great. Not quite like the iPod Touch, but easily as good as or better than those on the Classic. One of the main reasons I chose the Zune was for the FM radio. The radio data is a great plus, especially when it allows you to save songs you like and combine with the cheap music subscription to download them later instead of forgetting what I wanted.

Negatives:
Player doesnt have a 'Genius' feature to make custom playlists on the fly. The computer software has a 'mixview' option, but its recommendations would have to manually be created into a playlist and then transferred to your player. The wireless sync is a nice feature, but for anything more than small amounts, it's too slow. I think it will be better once I have most of my collection installed and am making only minor syncs.

Software:
The Zune 3.0 software that I downloaded works great. The only drawback seems to be that it requires a good bit of processing power to run, so having it open while running many other things slows things down a bit. Maybe I just need to upgrade my computer. The screensaver it displays is clearly the highlight of the program with album art and artist pictures for each song.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with my Zune and look foreward to using it for a long time. Hope this review helps anyone on the fence. iPods are great products, but there are other players out there that work great. I can't see how anyone would regret buying a Zune.

Great product!! recommended over an ipod. i use to have three ipods and they all had problems. this zune works great and has not give me problems. it has a bigger screen and a better music quality over ipod. the only thing i dont like is the glossy finish. i wish they would have stuck withe the flat black. it would have looked alot better all flat black. other than that its perfect!!

  Nice and reliable

Microsoft Zune is the new MP3 player made by Microsoft to counter Sound Blaster and Apple on the MP3/MP4 large HD music players. This new version is the Gears of War 2 special version of the 120 GB Zune and apart from the 30 hour battery and 120 GB for Multimedia resources, they added extra goodies related to Gears of War, such as themes, videos and music. As they say, Welcome to the Social.
Good:
Intuitive browsing
Wi-fi sync, even with PC or Xbox 360
FM Radio
Downloading
30 hour batteries.
Real resolution video player, without fixes.
Bad:
A bit heavy
Only for sale at the US
You must register for downloads

Anyway, it's your choice.
Differences between Zune and the iPod:
Smaller and more simple joystick.
"Back" button
Smaller electronics: More speed, less energy cost.
Faster HD
More extensive browsing (artist to artist skips, album to album, etc...)
FM integrated radio.

Here's my review, but I'm not forcing you to buy a Zune, just thinking it better about it.

MICROSOFT ZUNE 120 BLACK DIGITAL MEDIA PLAYER

I bought a Zune MP Player for my husband for Christmas.
Right away my husband love the quality in the Zune. The sound is nothing like I have heard ! I purchased this from a very good seller as well.
The features are far above the typical "ipod" (apple) that is out there now.
Overall, I'd recommend the Zune to be purchased on E-bay if you're on a budget.

I was at a point of deciding whether to purchase a zune or ipod. My wife owns the ipod and seems to work just fine. So I decided to go the other way and buy the zune. I have never been happier with the ease and capabilities the zune has to offer. Two things made me swing my vote. First was the price. It seemed that the zune was much more affordable than the popular ipod. And second, was the built-in fm radio that allows you to tag a song (that gives you the artist and name of song)to downlaod later. I managed to win a zune 120gb off of ebay which was much affordable than any ipod with that much gb space. Overall, this is one purchase that I am 100 percent pleased with, and will stay busy downloading my favorite tunes and videos for a long time to come.

Leaps and bounds ahead of the iPod

With microsoft's Zune Pass, Marketplace and killer hardware, the Zune is clearly the winner between the iPod vs Zune contest.

The integration with other MS services is a very enticing prospect.

You can be sure that you are future proof. Microsoft will issue updates that will give all the zune versions the same next-gen features.

My Second Microsoft Zune (120 GB)
Review created: 06/20/09
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Ok, so I hope that you will be patient with me. This is my very first review. I am a person that when I find something really cool, I have to tell everyone I know, and some strangers about it. This is one of those times! I absolutely love the Microsoft Zune. It is amazingly easy to use and even my children can operate all of the functions. I did have the first gen iPod, and it has NOTHING on the Zune, well besides a higher price tag and a smaller hard drive.
Like the iPod, the Zune offers video player and music player functionality. But, unlike the iPod, the Zune has an FM radio tuner, wireless sync, video and media streaming and even Zune-to-Zune sharing. My Zune even hooks up with my Xbox 360 wirelessly. There are so many features that are cool with this device, that I would be writing a novella if I went into everything. One of the best things is that it does have a decent battery life. I can watch many full length movies before it needs to charge. None of this 2-3 hour junk you get with the other video and mp3 players. The Zune plays many more video formats than I expected. The Zune software is nice and really keeps your collection organized, the only negative thing I could say about it is that being a Microsoft product, you would think that they would use drag and drop capabilities. Oh well, maybe in the future.
Microsoft is always there if you need help. You can call them or go to the Zune boards. There are expert users and Microsoft techs that will answer all of your questions, even the lame ones like, "Why won't it turn on?" (Ok, so I did not slide the lock switch to unlock, but hey I was a newbie)Also the zune marketplace it a really great place to get music and video. It is super easy to use and the prices are fantastic. I also love the high res screen. Movies and pictures look amazing on it.
So why did I buy a second Zune, if the first one was so reliable? I have two words for you ZUNE ENVY. My dad had ZUNE ENVY! With father's day coming up and all, I thought that my dad would finally stop hinting about how he wishes he had a zune for those long business plane trips. So now my siblings hate me, because their ties and polo shirts look LAME next to the SUPERCOOL Zune, that my dad has not put down since I gave it to him at the big Father's day dinner Last night!! I hope that this review helps you decide whether or not to buy a zune. I really say just go for it, you will not be sorry. Well, I would say to make sure you get one that is from a reputable seller, as with all electronics, it would suck if you bought one that was DOA.

  Great Investment for Music Lovers

I just purchased the 120gb Zune. I'm not super technology savvy so I was afraid when I received it, I might never figure out how to use it. That wasn't the case at all. It was so easy to get started: just go to www.zune.net/setup and download the software, install it (this takes about an hour or so) then plug Zune into usb port, you can organize your music, pics, and videos while it charges enough to turn on, then go. I was able to put about 30 entire CDs, all my pictures of my artwork, and my movies that have digital copies on the Zune within 2 hours (i didnt have the CDs or movies loaded into my computer so I had to rip them as I went). Even all the stuff I put on it barely made a dent in the memory space. I chose to buy a Zune over an Ipod because it seemed more user friendly. It has great features like if you listen to the radio it will tell you the name of the song and who sings it, and even purchase from Zune Marketplace. And because it has cool accessories available like a car charger that is also an FM transmitter so you can power up and listen to your music collection in the car! I just love the Zune and would recommend it to anyone.

I enjoy using the 120gb zune. It's GREAT. The shipment was extremely quick and the item was described like it said the ebay. I appropriately paid for the item using a 10 percent coupon from paypal and it was immediately shipped without any issues. I paid 160.00 which includes a discount which would of costed 230.00. This is a great deal that I've had in a long time. It's truly a good site where I can bargain or look for items of interest. Thank you.

  Why I love my Zune!
Review created: 04/05/09

This is my first mp3 player.I researched for literally months before I narrowed my choices down to 3 brands; then finally a Zune 120. I have friends with ipods(of course!),Archos, creative zen and the zune. One factor in my decision was at amazon.com I read all the reviews of the teenagers who had been die hard ipoders until they were introduced to the Zune. I went to the store and played with the different models. The zune has a smooth way of going from program to program; one thing I really like is the touch pad where you simply run your finger over it and it easily moves you to where you want to go. I find it very easy to learn even though it is my first. The sound is terrific.I actually am glad I bought it on ebay because I have been able to email the incredibly accomidating seller whenever I have a question. I feel very confident I made the right decision!

  Worth Every Penny!
Review created: 04/05/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In my opinion, Microsoft's Zune is the best mp3 player on the market. I have owned most every kind available and nothing has compared to the features of a Zune. However, I did find three things that I did not like. First of all, a touch screen would have been nice. I know they could have, I just don't know why they didn't. Secondly, I do like the concept of the touch pad sensitive controls. It comes in handy with some games and helps with browsing through your Zune's media. But I think the sensitivity gets kind of annoying and in the way sometimes. The third thing I dislike about the Zune is the games. It comes with 5 games and only 3 of them are really good. I think the Zune Pass should have games and applications for sell and download. You can download games for the Zune online from a couple of websites but if your not computer smart it could be complicated. Unfortunately their are only a limited amount of games available right now for the Zune and most of them are pretty corny. But I do predict better games soon.
So overall the Zune is almost perfect. I have the 120 GB Zune and I have over 19,000 songs, all my pictures, and over 100 movies. I still have 29 gig's of storage left too! The picture quality is definitely above average but not quite as bright as I would like it to be for movies and games sometime.
I believe the greatest part about the Zune is the Zune Pass. For only $15 a month you get unlimited music downloads for your Zune! That means, for the price of one CD a month, you can have as many songs for you Zune as you want. My 120 GB Zune will hold around 30,000 songs. If you wanted to buy enough CD's to have 30,000 songs, it would cost around $30,000! Not to mention, with Zune Pass you will never have to worry about getting a virus from an infected & untrustworthy download! This makes Zune Pass one of the greatest deals of our lifetime!
Their are so many great things about having a Zune. For example, when you are listening to the built in FM transmitter and hear a song you like, you can mark it for download in the marketplace on Zune Pass. That way, next time your Zune is connected to the internet via WiFi, Zune Pass will automatically download the songs you have saved from the radio stations you have been listening to. With the WiFi you can connect to Zune Pass anywhere their is wireless internet and download songs and whole albums almost instantly to your Zune!
I would definitely recommend a Zune for anyone.

Its four times bigger than my last one, syncs with my PC wirelessly, works with Windows Media Player (unlike a competitor product), has a huge screen, works in my car (thanks to a car kit), fairly thin and light, beautiful to operate.

Only things that I'm having trouble with, is making the screen fade away when playing music (to increase the battery life to its full potential), and the learning curve on syncing is a little tough - beautiful product, get it instead of an ipod any day (unless you prefer paying a premium for something that matches your laptop/ you like the look of more etc). - Conza

Had a classic ipod and click wheel stopped working. Decided after LOTS of research to try the Zune 120gb. I have been IMPRESSED. The screen size, the sound, wireless capabilities plus FM receiver make it far exceed anything Apple offers. I can't understand why Zune has not taken over the market!!!

I love the clarity of the graphics on the big screen; it looks great with the games too. Wireless sync is a plus. Also, you can link to your friends' Zunes. What I don't like is the fact that it sounds horrible when it's not plugged into the a/v source output and the volume is not very loud when you're trying to listen to it with headphones. The iPod definitely outperforms the Zune when you're wanting to use it on the go.
