a 'subtle' portrait of the MJ, more or less...

i've seen other films produced by the MJ that discuss his life and career; this one seemed a bit more scaled down than say, 'dangerous: the short films' or even 'moonwalker'... i did like how the fact that diana ross did not 'discover' the jackson 5 was discussed (by brother marlon and others). there also seemed to be more of a focus on his art before 'thriller', which is curious to me, since most documentaries on his life stay a while on this era. there was actually no mention of the 'bad' album, even though there were clips of live footage from this era. the younger footage (as well as 'motown 25') could be attributed to the film also being produced by motown. however, it was not a complete love song to motown- the jackson brothers' frustration with the lack of creative freedom was mentioned.
'the legend continues' showed jackson as a person who dreamed big, and acted upon those dreams. it hadn't yet documented this larger than life figure in the way we are now familiar with, as his later films have done. there are things i like about all of the films actually; but this film was more or less only the beginning, before the huge statues and running with hundreds of police. there was something quite charming and humble about it, considering the state of celebrity he was in at the time of this documentary's release.
i also loved the fact that there were songs (and images) used in this film that the other films have not utilized. most of the other films have used the more popular hit singles and images, but the coordinators decided to use some gems- the album cute. this is a nice little extra piece for someone who collects videos and other memorabilia of the MJ.
peace...
