Recording information: 1987 - 1989. METAMORPHOSIS showcases 20 years of live performances by the Japanese psychedelic folk group Ghost. This CD and DVD compilation includes vocal and instrumental improvisations that shine a light on Ghost's experimental side. Straying away from the traditional guitar-led song structures found on their self-titled and second albums, the live shows feature percussion, saxophone, and harp, among other instruments, courtesy of multi-instrumentalist Taishi Takizawa. From the minimal, tribal beginnings of "Hakkyou Dojin" to the 30-minute freakout, "Children of the Earth," METAMORPHOSIS hits the many notes of Ghost's sound. To list the plethora of contributors, members, and styles that span Ghost's career would take a release of its own; yet this one nicely chronicles their ever-changing lineup with comprehensive notes. The accompanying DVD features live footage of performances at interesting and intimate settings (with over-the-top light shows, a candlelit temple performance, and lead-man Masaki Batoh in a Free Tibet march), presenting yet another facet of this most curious of ensembles.
