Metal Gear Solid is a franchise loved and loathed by gamers all over. It has some of the best production values, well developed characters and cinematic qualities. It may go under fire for it's methodical stealth based approach but it's a formula that has been a signature of the series since it's humble beginnings in 1987. I would go so far as to say that Metal Gear(1987) for the MSX is the first stealth-action game ever made. So how has the series evolved in fourteen years? Well for one they added a new camera angle which totally transformed the way the game is played. In the past, Metal Gear games relied on an onscreen radar to aid you in getting the drop on your enemies. Now you can simply go into first person view and scan your surroundings yourself. If you've been following the Metal Gear series up to this point you might be saying: "But londin123, I was able to do that in Metal Gear Solid(1999) for the playstation. What makes this so different?

You have a good point Mr. Long Time Fan. You see, though you could view things in a first person view, you could not interact with it the way you do. Okay so it really just boils down to shooting things but there is some incentive to using the first person. Of course there's precision aiming and damage points. In other words, shoot a gaurd in the arm and you won't be able to aim with both arms. Shoot him in the leg and he limps, shoot him in the head and well....you get the point.

With all these pluses, where are the minuses? Well Metal Gear Solid 2 is a point in the series where the storyline begins to betray its audience. The story ends on an open note where nothing really comes to any real conclusion. I suppose this was meant to add to its cinematic flair but if that was the case, there could have at least been an ending. Oops, I just spoiled it for you; sorry.

Point is, it's not for everybody. It's a one player game for one person so forget about ever throwing a "Metal gear Solid" party: that's what Halo is for. I myself have been a fan of Metal Gear Solid since 1999 and as a fan I find little to hate with multiplayer being the exception.

If I were you I would not even buy this as Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is a far superior package. It's the same game with a large collection of extra missions(250+) that are sure to hold your attention for months after you beat the initial game. It might cost a little more money but hey, that's the price you pay for quality or quantity depending on who you talk to(check out a Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance review).

On a scale of 1 to 10 I give Metal Gear a 9 out of 10. The storyline may dissapoint because of it's lack of closure and some of the conversations between characters run a bit long but overall it is an experience every type of gamer can enjoy. Story buffs or hardcore gameplay types will find a lot to like. l Besides, if you're aware of Playstation 3's upcoming title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots than you should consider playing this so when 4 comes out you'll know what's going on. If you have played Metal Gear Solid 3 but none of the other Metal Gear games then you owe it to yourself to play this and Metal Gear Solid 1 for the original playstation; there is a lot going on in the Metal Gear series.

One of the most anticipated titles in PlayStation2 history absolutely lives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the follow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the original PlayStation. Solid Snake, everyone's favorite mullet-sporting supersoldier, is back, along with many other familiar faces and voices. While its predecessor was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns. Also, like Metal Gear Solid, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.
Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, significantly deepening the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. The sound is also topnotch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What makes this game such a standout, however, is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form somewhere between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest.

I have been a metal gear fan for a long time. I played most of the metal gear games, and wish that there will be many more titles in the future. My favorite thing about it, is the amount of patience you need in order to play the game. waiting for a gaurd to pass, or waiting for the perfect shot. It is a great experiecne, that varies differntly from many games of the day.

Greatest series ever, and the rare Substance for PS2..

I absolutely love the MGS series, and this is a fine addition to my collection, as would be anyone who is a fan.. And in the rare format of PS2, hard to find, Gotta Love it..

Many fun VR missions, and you can play as snake during the Shell missions, it is more difficult but what is a Metal Gear game without the Legendary Solid Snake, with the voice of David Hayter..

Gaming was good as well graphics. Classic type of game. The story line was eash to follow. Levels progressed well and challenged the player to think through choices during the game. I would recommend the game to others that liek playing this sort of game.

  Fun game

Really fun game. Almost exactly the same style of gameplay as MGS1. Beefed up graphics and a little more fluid controls. Only complaint is that it might be a little too much like the first one, only that you are playing a different mission, but that isn't really too bad of a thing.

  More to Metal Gear

I bought Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance because I was trying to get the whole Metal Gear Collection. MGS2: Substance is basically MGS2: Sons of Liberty, with more content. The already great gameplay and graphics remains intact, but the extras makes it worth it's money. 350+ VR Missions, 5 new Snake Tales with Solid Snake, and New Characters and Game Modes. My only gripe is the Skateboarding mode; I really didn't care for it.

MGS2 was beautiful already, but this is perfection!!
Review created: 10/08/09
by:

Not even a review, but if you bought Substance I'm quite sure you've already played MGS2, so I feel no need to review the main game (if you haven't, then read a review of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty). This has everything MGS2 has but includes many extra content!

The content ranges from:

-Slightly more debugged
-Hundreds of VR Missions
-An alternate storyline
-and of course....SKATEBOARDING!!!!!!! (since this was around the time when Tony Hawk took the gaming community by storm)

The VR Missions and the extra storyline really adds on to the replay value, and the skateboarding is fun to play around with.

  Metal Gear Solid 2
Review created: 08/06/09

A great sequel to a Great Game. Metal Gear Solid 2 really 1 ups the original Metal Gear. With the extra add on "1st person" shooter, it brings the whole Metal Gear saga to a new level. Plus with new and improved graphics and sharper enemies, you feel like your in a race to stop Metal Gear Ray. The enemies now have backup that is similar to Swat Teams. With their Bullet Proof Vests and Shields, you have to find their weak points. Really a great game for any fan of Metal Gear.

Review created: 08/03/09

My goal is have the Metal Gear Solid Collection, so I bought Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance. The game was in very good condition and has everything I wanted. However, QualityDisc , when you sent me the game I found in the instruction manual a card of The World of Warcraft, with the Sleeping Ogro symbol in it...what do you mean by that? :)

Metal Gear Solid was an amazing series standing alone. But to add so much cool new features is like overkill. But im not complaing at all. You can spend days playing through all of the extra stuff and it is awesome. Great addition to anyones Metal Gear collection.

MUST play the first to understand this one.
Review created: 07/11/09
by:

If youre thinking about buying this game, MAKE SURE you play the first series, or else you will not understand this side of the story and will just get lost. Seriously, its VERY wise to play the first one, or you will be a clueless player all through the game.

the graphics are beautiful, the dialouge is perfect. the cutscenes are long, but thats very common for Metal Gear. Snake is not the only playable character. you will be able to play as Snake for a very short period in the game and then Raiden is your remaining playable character.

there's so much to talk about of this game, but it is worth buying.
