Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (PC Games, 2003)

One of the most anticipated titles in PlayStation2 history absolutely lives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the follow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the original PlayStation. Solid Snake, everyone's favorite mullet-sporting supersoldier, is back, along with many other familiar faces and voices. While its predecessor was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns. Also, like Metal Gear Solid, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.
Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, significantly deepening the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. The sound is also topnotch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What makes this game such a standout, however, is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form somewhere between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest.

This is an excellent game and one of my favorite series of games. This game however, should have stayed on the PS2/XBOX. The game has serious issues with all but a few video cards, and in most cases, in order to actually see any textures in the game, you must first download a patch and swap your *.exe files for the games to work with your video card. So unless you have a system with an earlier video card (GeForce256, GeForce2, Geforce3, or Gforce4) which most of us don't these days, you are gonna have to use a patch for this game to work. The controls are also very mind boggling to set up. The default keyboard controls are all over the keyboard, not the WASD + mouse that we are all used to. And configuring a gamepad is very frustrating to say the least. The only way that I can think of to truly configure a gamepad would be to use an actual PS2 controller.

Now don't get me wrong though, Metal Gear Solid 2 is an excellent game, and I am a die hard fan of the series. I just think that the experience is far less frustrating on a PS2. That said, if you are looking at adding this title to your collection, you would be better off getting the PS2 or XBOX versions if you have those consoles. And if it was in my budget, I would have rather purchased a PS2 console AND Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for PS2. That way I could already be enjoying the game instead of wasting my time trying to configure my controller!

This is exactly the same as Substance on ps2 or Xbox. Buy those versions instead. This is not a good pc game. It's still fun (it's MGS, what do you expect) but it's the same thing as the console games and this port isn't that much better at all. If you don't have a console system, buy this game definitely. If you do have a console, forget this game and buy the console versions.

Does not even work on Windows 7 or Vista and I know there are difficulties on the XP version. Plain and simple it's like impossible to play it on any current operating system. Microsoft or Konami must release a patch for it to work on Windows 7.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is one of the best in the MGS series. It plays great on all platforms (PS2 and PC DVD-Rom). The story is as interesting as the rest of the MGS games. Totally recommended for action games enthusiasts.

This game always keeps you on your toes. Thinking is part of the game. Metal Gear is the best in Stealth and Espionage.

I bought Metal Gear Substance because is a great game! Love the stealth action and the graphics. ALso both playable characters, Raven and Solid Snake, have differents atacking moves which makes the game even more fun.

I played the first Metal Gear Solid game on PC, therefore I buy this game. The first one is a great game, however it froze at the end of the game. There's a bug that cause the game to froze. Therefore I buy the second game. The second game is great. But make sure your computer have enough processing power. So you can really enjoy the graphic it provides.
