Loved it. Extremely intuitive. Each evening I read this book, I enjoyed visiting their town of Kelly. I loved Merle's life with Ted. But as with all good things, they come to an end. It could not have been any better for Merle. But it still ripped my guts out.

As a collector and dealer of angling and hunting books, and a lover of all outdoors, I can say with confidence that this is one of the best non-fiction dog stories I have ever read. I would recommend it to anyone that shares a special relationship with a dog, cat, or other pet. Kerasote writes with a love and a pathos that comes through clearly in the pages of this story. Filled with laughs, and stained with tears, this book is a great piece of writing.

Merle's door is for anyone who has lived with a dog, loved a dog, or just loves dogs in general. Ted lets you into the intimate relationship he shares with Merle, his wonderful canine companion. You feel as if you are in Wyoming, sharing their experiences. If you are a dog lover, you will love this book!

This is a fantastic book, originally read via loan from good dog-owning friends. I bought it so my wife could read it. Far from being a sentimental history of a man and his dog, this is much more - an exploration of the relationship between a dog and his man, bolstered by scientific information that manages not to become dry. The "conversations" between Merle and Ted are wonderful; most dog owners will probably relate to the messages given by barks, looks, wags, and so on, and this is managed here without becoming cute. Merle was a wonderful being; Ted was a great companion; and the book is a delightful addition to any library.

This is the best book I have ever read, and I am a serious reader. Ted Kerasote has taken a lovely, touching story of his life with his dog, and exposed a deep level of understanding, compassion, and love rarely, if ever, seen. Anyone who has a pet should read this wonderful, wonderful book. It will open your eyes in a whole new way and make you appreciate the amazing bond you have with your dog.

This book is such a beautiful story-It also has many interesting scientific facts on the thinking inside of a dogs mind. I recieved my copy of this book as a gift-I then went on to purchase several copies to give as gifts to friends! Thankyou Mr. Kerasote for writing such a beautiful tribute to your canine friend!

  LOOOOOOOOVED THIS STORY!

Such a touching story about a man and his love for his dog and his dog's love for him. Could see the two of them together along with the other characters in the story. The setting was perfect too, although I have never been to the Tetons but know how beautiful it is through pictures from a friend that visited. Hope I get to go one day. It is no wonder the dog is God spelled backwards. They are truly a gift from him!

I love dogs and this was told by the owner about what he thought the dog
was saying. If we would only listen, we would know what dogs (and cats) are
trying to tell us.

Merle's Door, perhaps the BEST dog story EVER written
Review created: 04/12/09

If you LOVE dogs, this book is a MUST. Its not a Marley kinda book, but an intense book about the incredible relationship between a man and a very special dog. It explores the intracies of dog behavior and human behavior relating to dogs. It is warm, at times funny, ALL the time, amazing, and its the kind of book you just do NOT want to end.

Re: the ebay vendor selling this soo cheap, I have to buy about 10 to give as gifts.. just amazing, I LOVE THIS BOOK

  Merle's Door by Ted Kerasote
Review created: 03/10/09

I loved the parts of the story when Merle the dog would explain his side of things. It was like having your dog human talk about his life. And I think I understand my own dog's thoughts because of Merle's descriptions. I got a little bored with the science, wilderness side of Ted's story. I loved the freedom and personality of Merle, I could have used more Merle, less Ted.

  Merle's Door
Review created: 01/03/09

This book was recommended to me by a fellow animal lover. It begins with Ted Kerasote taking a journey down a river with friends and finding a stray dog along the way. Ted has a remarkable sense in knowing what this dog is trying to say and tell him. So he takes him home and we discover that this dog really does have a mind of his own. It's a true story and Merle really did exist.
Not only do we get to experience this wonderful dog's life but it changed the way I look at my own two German Shepherds. I can 'read' them a little better now.
The book also explains how dogs came from wolves etc, which is very interesting. The multiple explanations get a little drawn out but it doesn't deter from the book at all.
This book has affected me so much that I will never stop thinking of it. I dance! I dance! will be forever etched in my mind. I also want to visit the part of the country where he lived so I can see it through his eyes. Someday I will.
This is one book that I will never give away. I will loan it out -it's on loan now- but will always request it back. In fact once I get it back, I will read it again. It's a wonderful, wonderful book.
Ted has a website where you can see pics of Merle. I hope he never takes it down so I can visit often.

  Merle's Door
Review created: 01/03/09

Probably the best book about dogs ever written. Ted Kerasote uses the life and times of his once-in-a-lifetime dog, Merle, to explore the dog/human connection, the psychology of the canine mind, and the history and evolution of dogs. Every dog lover on Earth should definitely read this book. And what about those who are not? They will definitely respect canines by the book's end, if not become dog lovers themselves.

Great read for the intellectual dog lover. A MENSA version of "Marley and Me", which I also thought was a great book. Both will leave you teary as you remember your own Merle or Marley.

  Now my favorite book.
Review created: 12/15/08

This is the best book I have ever read. I tell everyone they should read it. Especailly dog lovers. It gives you concepts and thinking through the dogs point of view, and a humans too. It shows how a free dog interacts with uncondiontal love with its human. Merle was a toss away dog at a national park and he choose the human he wanted to be with. There story is amazning, you will laugh, cry and be in amazement by this book.

A Best Seller book for a price far below market value.
Review created: 12/05/08
by:

A neighbor and fellow doglover loaned me this book. I enjoyed it so much, I bought my own copy for a ridiculously low cost of $ 5.oo total including shipping. The content of the book is testimony to the priceless loyalty and companionship dogs can deliver. A good book is a wise investment and this item qualifies big time.

E-Bay can be a delightful resource for the buyer who seeks a bargain, but is also willing to pay a fair price when demands and sniper bidders lerk to buy and then resell. I personally resent this type of bidder. It prevents E-Bay from being it's best. The book is a treasure. I bought it due to the price as the seller was proud to present a bargain for the seller who appreciated the savings.

Merle's Door, lessons from a free thinking dog
Review created: 11/08/08

This book is a wonderful example of how we can build a strong bond with dogs. The content is both informative and the story fascinating. For every person that has loved and cared for a dog they rescue, never knowing the dog's past history, this is a great inspiration of trust and compassion.
I was so terribly sad at the end (and cried all over the book)of the book both for the passing of Merle who lived a great life full of adventure that any dog would love, but also to finish a great story. It will be hard to find something so compelling to read about a man and his dog. A true classic.
