Album Notes Compilation producers: Jeff Aldrich, Howard Benson. As generation-defining television series go, Aaron Spelling's "Melrose Place" occupies the same place for 90's twentysomethings as Spelling's "Dynasty" did for their parents--proving that obsessing over titilating soap operas is not era-specific. Where "Melrose Place" succeeds over its Eighties' counterpart is in relating to its viewers' tastes rather than drowning them in opulence; thus, MELROSE PLACE - THE MUSIC is brimming with up-and-coming alterna-popsters, rather than proven commercial supernovas. Post-modern guitar heroes (Urge Overkill, Dinosaur Jr.), perennial "next big things" (Divinyls, James), and future "Buzz Bin"-ers (Letter To Cleo, Seed) all blaze through excellent originals, ready to set the Alternative Nation of "Melrose"-junkies afire. Yet, it is a trio of under-rated, established singer/songwriters (Aimee Mann, Sam Phillips and Paul Westerberg), whose commercial fates have long seemed sealed, who serve MELROSE PLACE - THE MUSIC best. Their confident, almost stately contributions illustrate that "it" is not all about appearences, and offer the only historical perspective on a collection built for the moment.
