The Tibetan Buddhist meditative technique called Medicine Buddha practice invokes healing through visualization and mantra. The two long tracks on Jonathan Goldman's MEDICINE BUDDHA serve as powerful aids to this ancient method of physical and spiritual healing.
The first selection, "Medicine Buddha Suite," layers chant, deep overtone singing and singing bowls. After about 10 minutes of this very grounding chorale, a danceable middle section emerges, offering a novel melding of Tibetan chant with Native American percussion and flute, before going back to the relatively sedate sound of the beginning. The second selection, "Heart of Wisdom Sutra" pairs a classic Buddhist mantra with celestial vocal harmonies. Throughout the 60-plus minutes of music on this album, Goldman both honors the traditional sounds of Tibetan chant and follows his muse to unexpected places. The result is a deeply felt and embracing soundtrack for meditation, ritual, or movement.
