The Maxx - MTV Original Series
Review created: 11/13/08

This is a 12 episode television series from MTV during the mid-90's. Each episode is about 10 minutes and the whole series plays thru as a cohesive whole 2 hours in length. It's the story of the Maxx, an amnesic "super-hero" who is very confused and depressed. He's stuck between two worlds. One is the outback ... Australia ... Panjea. There he is a jungle King, a warrior protecting his Jungle Queen. The other world is our world, where he is homeless and lives in a box in an alley. He shifts between both worlds against his free will. In our world he's protected by Julie Winters, a social worker. The Maxx's nemesis, the only one who is aware of his travels between both worlds, is Mr. Gone. This an extremely psychologically deep story of how all the characters are connected and what their origins are. Every episode ends on a cliff hanger, so you pretty much watch the whole series as tho it were a motion picture. This story fascinates me and is one of the best TV representations of a comic book that I've ever seen. I love it & would highly recommend it.

  Classic MTV Cartoon
Review created: 07/08/08

This show was popular on MTV late at night, and is only available on VHS. Which is a tragedy.

The series follows the adventures of the titular hero in the real world and in an alternate reality, referred to as The Outback. In the real world the Maxx is a vagrant while in the Outback he is the protector of the Jungle Queen. The Jungle Queen is similar to the Maxx in that she also exists in the real world as Julie Winters, a freelance social worker who often bails the Maxx out of jail. While the Maxx is aware of the Outback, Julie is not, though it is integral to the story of both the Maxx and Julie.

A must buy for any comic fan.

The Maxx is a must have for any fan of Sam Kieth's work. The artwork is outrageous, ranging from gritty realism to cartoonish caricatures. The characters are fallible, funny and, despite their over-the-top tendencies, altogether easy to identify with.

It's a tale of two worlds, two men, one woman, and one girl. With all the psychological twists and turns, you'll need a road map to get through your first trip, but it's such an entertaining trek, you won't mind going there again and again. And every time you visit, you'll come back with something new.

If you liked the comic, you'll love the animated series. It's a must have, and you should definitely get it before it's gone.

  Watch This!

The Maxx's short lived animated series is a must see. The story is centered on Maxx, a homeless, seemingly schizophrenic "superhero" who lapses between the real world and Pangea, a prehistoric fantasy where he is a true hero. The art is really dark and detailed. It's styled and based on the comic (which is also really good). It's much different than any other show out there and I can't imagine why it would have died out so quickly. A must see.

The Maxx movie series that is no longer on the air
Review created: 02/05/07

I personally am not the one that wanted the tape. My boyfriend loved the show on MTV and he has done nothing but talk about how bad he wanted the series to watch. I got it for him after finding it on ebay and I patiently sat for an entire night watching every episode with him. It was hard to follow being such an odd story line, but he loved the movie and it very excited to have finally found it. I think that the price was pretty high. Why it was so much i don't understand. I mean...it was $20 more that a sex and the city series which I personally would have like to have purchased instead. The only problem was the price. But remember, i am not the one that wanted or was remotely interested in the item. I got it for him as a gift and he was psyched about it.

one of my favorites of all time

The movie version of The Maxx is one of my favorite movies of all time. Like many of history's truly great works of art, it's simultaneously appreciable to the casual viewer watching it on a surface level and the serious viewer analyzing its every nuance. The first viewing of The Maxx is tremendously enjoyable and invigorating, if not slightly confusing. The subsequent viewings are all equally enjoyable, yet ever-increasingly thought-provoking. The Maxx is a work of art that succeeds on every level. The characters, the art, the drawing, the pacing, and the incredible depth are all impeccible.

  Best Cartoon EVER!
Review created: 06/05/06

Simply put, this is the best cartoon ever! It follows the storyline of a gigantic purple misfit superhero and his parallel lives in our world and his imagined (Australia-like) other land. MTV put this out back in the day and have never released it on DVD. The only way to watch it is on VHS - actually it might be included on MTV's Oddities released on DVD. I am not even really a cartoon watcher - THE MAXX is all about the story, the characters and the exciting world you are transported to!
