Album Notes
Persona: Eric Cook.
Like other releases on Vinyl Communications by Kid606 and Lesser, hardcore techno designed for the living room doesn't seem like such a bizarre prospect after listening to Eric Cook's debut as Persona. The drummer for noise-rockers Gravitar emphasizes a diverse sonic palate, definitely in keeping with his former band. On tracks like the opener "Release the Dogs," "Dingspumm," and "Counting Time in Flu Season," Cook constructs dense walls of distorted metallic percussion, then breaks them all down with legions of effects-processing tools; in fact, he rarely even pauses between tracks. At times, it all gets a bit overwhelming -- there must be enough ideas here to pad out five albums. Fortunately, he takes a few sidetrips: into paranoid breakbeat (albeit, distorted breakbeat) on "Thumper," and with the live-sounding drums "Waiting for Matika." Vinyl Communications also tacked on five remixes, by Kid606, Lesser, Marumari, Totemplow, and Cook's fellow suburban Detroiter Warn Defever (from His Name Is Alive). ~ John Bush
