The Matrix (DVD, 1999)

The Matrix is a great movie for so many reasons. You have a great soundtrack, prefect actors, action scenes like no other, and special effects that are jaw dropping. Keanu Reeves stars as Neo who leads a pretty boring life. All the sudden he gets a message to follow the white rabbit, then has to choose between the red and blue pill, learns Kung Fu, and has to become "The One". While he doesn't believe he is "the One" Morpheus does and does everything he can to train Neo the best he can. This movie also introduced bullet time, a very cool special effect. My favorite part of this movie is when he walks into a building, the metal detecter beeps and the guard asks him to remove any metal objects, you should know the rest and if you dont, you need to See this movie! It is a great movie all around!

The first time I saw The Matrix in theaters, I really didn't "get" all of it. I missed so many of the things that make this movie as fabulous as it is. But watching it on DVD makes the movie even that much better... Especially if you choose to "follow the white rabbit."

Following the white rabbit allows you to hit a button on your remote whenever a white rabbit appears in the corner of the screen to get a behind the scenes look at "how did they do that?" Fabulous feature.

As for the movie itself... What can I say that hasn't already been said? Probably not much. But that never stopped me before. So bear with me as I go over some of the finer points that most other people can't leave out of their reviews either. I apologize for any repetition.

The Matrix is a fantastical epic. The amount of thought that must've gone into the script just blows my mind. From the whole Alice in Wonderland parallel to the Neo-Christ parallel to the post-apocalyptic world that is created for us, it is just one amazing story.

The special effects are unmatched. Knowing that it took about two years to come up with the technology that allowed Neo to master the matrix to slow down time and dodge bullets...it just makes me say "wow." What a leap of faith by the production staff, starting the filming of the movie not knowing how or even if they would be able to make that scene work.

I have no complaints as far as the actors are concerned. I think the cast did an excellent job with the excellent script they had to work with. They did not disappoint. Costumes? You can't go wrong with basic black, especially when the actors are sexy and some of them are wearing vinyl.

A driving soundtrack backs up the non-stop action. It's not really my genre, so I wouldn't go buy the soundtrack, but it fits perfectly with the visuals.

This movie is a must see. Not only is it visually pleasing, but its plot is satisfying, and it is quite thought provoking. Definitely near the top of my list. Although I must admit, I try to think of this as a stand-alone movie, as I don't like the later two parts of the trilogy as much.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this movie? It's a classic. A pioneering film through its unique story and also, for lack of better words, it's Matrix action scenes. This movie may be a classic but it's sequels pale in comparison...they are just ok action flicks at best. This is the real McCoy in the modern scifi action-thriller-drama scene, rent it if you haven't yet. Otherwise your missing out on one of our most recent all-time best classics.

The Matrix is one of my all time favorite movies. I loved the scene when Noe and Trinity shot their way through the lobby. The Matrix is one of those movies I can sit and watch over again, even though I know how it all works out. I suppose it part of the magic. But somehow you can't shake the feeling maybe it will all end differently this time.

Unlike many other FX movies, this one isn't too bad on the small screen either.

Personally, I think Keanu Reeves is a bad actor. But His portrayal of Neo was amazing, and fit the character very well.
I know that Cypher is the bad guy, but you can't help but sympathize with him. I mean, how would YOU feel if you were sucked out of your comfortable little life into a world of war and slop? Why, oh why didn't he take the blue pill? And I don't know about you, but I wish Mouse hadn't died. He was a fantastic comic relief!
A lot of stuff in the movie doesn't make sense unless you watch it 20 times. But it was good enough that you wouldn't mind watching it so much.

'The Matrix' remains unsurpassed by its sequals. The story & the fight scenes are still the best in the original.

While the premise isn't new, or very well-developed, the cinematography is. The film is fun to watch because of all the gung-fu gunfights and 'bullet-time'.

The 2nd and 3rd films attempt to cash in on the popularity of the 1st. In a deluge of money spent of special effects, the filmmakers drowned out the spirit that made the original a success.

Watch the other 2 once or twice for fun -- but the first 'Matrix' will retain its appeal well after the others.

the enemy machines themselves. Rated R, this is definately not for your kids, but suitable for a young teen do to its lack of sexual contenet and profanity.

The Matrix, is a MUST see.

Neo comes to life in the first of the matrix trilogy!! I buy lots of products, and I have a very simple approach on reviewing them. Either I liked them or I didn't! Some of my reviews will tell you a little more, but this is a simple one. This product is worth it! If you can afford it, go right ahead and make the buy! If not, then do put it on your list! This is my second favorite best movie.This movie set a new standard in the sci-fi kick ass action movies.I love this movie.This is one you have to see many times over to really understand it.I learn something new every time I see it.The only time I do not like to see it is when it is on commercial t.v.You lose the continuity of it.This a movie you have to pay very close attention to when you see it.I believe there is a message in this movie about the world we live in today.Are we living in THE MATRIX? It is also about learning to believe in yourself.I think Morpheus asked Neo a question.He stated,you have the power to create whatever you want in life,DO YOU BELIEVE IT? I never get tired of seeing this movie.If you have not already seen it,I hope you will soon.I can not think of any other sci-fi movie that can stand up to to it.It is the ALL TIME BEST! TEN STARS!

Personally I LOVED this movie, it is now a TRUE Classic. The Special Effects made it a leader in special effects to come. The storyline was very fresh and innovative; no other movie even came close! It made you wonder if Neo had really woken up into reality, but his not truly being sure that it WAS reality, keep you wanting to see more. There was absolutly nothing I did not like about this movie. The DVD was bought for one of my sons for Christmas, as he had requested both Matrix 1 & 2, to take with him to Afghanistan.

WOW, it starts of fast, goes a little faster takes off and them bammo. Never a dull moment and and action movie that has such a unique and different plot that you are surprised around every corner.

I also liked the movie becuase it shows that computer hackers/geeks like myself can be heroes too.

This is an involved movie. It's best not to take bathroom breaks and remain focused. It took me five (5) viewings of this movie before the true genius of the movie makers hit me. I am not a movie fanatic and do not have very much time to spend watching movies yet since it's release I've watched this movie over 30 times. This movie is a challenge to your intellect as you try to determine what the matrix truly is and the impact that it has on each person during the movie. I found this movie to be fantastic because it challenged my mind, not once or twice but dozens of times. Even as I continue to re-watch this movie I discover new sub tle things that at first glance mean nothing but the more your mind absorbs what is happening and how one is "plugged into the matrix" you can let your mind wander and question how other parts of the movie might even be plausible. I give this movie my five star rating because of it's thoughtfulness. Very few movies provoke the mind to think as hard as this movie does, not necessarily to understand the surface plot but also to delve into the underlying theories of mind and consciousness. If you want a challenge for your mind, this is the movie to watch. When you watch this movie just ask yourself, based on what you know from the rest of the movie, how is the character Cypher able to hack into the Matrix and get out without the other members of the crew knowing it? Definitely a 5 Star movie for thinkers!

There is great movies but you never see a sci-fi movie win an oscar for best picture.I myself have only seen a few worthy of winning best picture.But this was the beginning of an era that i personally thought made people sit back and not only watch how far special effect's have come,but also to look at our live's and see that control is getting out of control and this movie showed in small way's that it can(and does)happen.The acting,superb..the cast,couldn't been better..The direction,excellent...the story line..well,you figure it out,the message was there for you to see.

I dont know why I like the Matrix so much. I'm not a sci-fi buff nor am I a anti-establishment guru but there was something about this movie that has it ranked among my top 5 favorite movies. The plot is simple but the details are what separate this from the rest it is filled with action, a love story, and a general sense of hope that the world can be saved. Final Opinion...BUY IT!

Once in a while a movie comes along that everyone should own; this is one of them! It is imperative if you want to have a good DVD library that it include not only the Matrix 1, but all 3!!!! This movie has one of the most amazing story lines of any movie I have had the pleasure of watching. It screams COOL, and Lawrence Fishburn is great as Morpheus! IF YOU HAVE NEVER WATCHED IT DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO SO SOON!!!

Ultimatly the message is about choice. Peace or war, ignore or take action. It also invites you to investigate whats going on, dont just sit back and accept what is in front of you, take a closer look and find out for your self, 'follow the rabbit'. Woke alot of people up, at least for a split second, to the idea that maybe the wool is being pulled over our eyes. Like it or not, this movie does speak some truth about our current situation. But it doesn't have to be taken that serious to be enjoyable, the special effects alone make this a great movie to watch.

Awesome! I can not think of any other movie that I still put in the DVD and watch, repeatedly. It is truely an amazing movie!

The first and best of the Matrix films.  The idea is new and the actors are fresh in their roles.  There are times when sequels are a good idea and times when they are not.  This movie should have stood alone.  I highly recommend this movie.  If you haven't seen the sequels, don't bother.  They only distract from the tight story line that began and ended with this film. Speaking of sequels, has anyone found a cure for James Bond?

Yeah, the special effects are really cool, the acting is good and the score is great too. But for me this movie is really inspirational. Take it as a metaphor for the illusion of physical reality or take it just at face value. Either way you'll get up at the end feeling reinvigorated and ready to know you are, not just think you are. I am hooked from minute one, even though I have seen this many times. I purchased this because I had previously owned it on VHS and wanted to upgrade to DVD.
