  Matewan is an important movie
Review created: 10/04/09

Matewan is a fine movie--one of my top twenty of all time. But even more important, it tells the story of a significant piece of American history seldom given adequate--or any--coverage in typical school history books. Granted, it takes some liberties with the actual events, but far fewer than one might expect from Hollywood. Both as a movie lover and a university professor, I give it my highest recommendation.

  My Dad lived this experience
Review created: 01/22/09
by:

My Dad and Uncle worked in the Mingo County mines during the 1920's. They experienced the hard hand of the coal Companies of those years. Another uncle died in a mine collapse.

The movie is true to what I heard my Dad tell of the experiences of those days.
He is gone now and he suffered from the "black Lung" caused by the coal dust of those mines.

I would recommend folks see this movie. Those who had family living in those days will appreciate the accuracy of the events. That's the way it was.

I saw this movie upon release and the now stars that were in the film is. In most John Sayles films there are stars yet unknown destined to become super stars or great character actor actors this film has both. I'm not going to detail the film just see it you will not be disappointed. You have my word. J.K.

The film came in excellent condition. I use the movie an an enhancement to a book I teach in American lit, and the vendor was extremely cooperative and sent the film as soon as it was available.

I grew up near where the movie took place and currently live near where it was filmed. The lady that was sitting at the dinner table stating something like there be no guns at the table was my Grandmother's friend.

  Gritty and realistic!
Review created: 08/04/06

This little film is excellent! The music, the look, everything is well researched and thought out. It is a realistic treatment of the grim reality that was every day life to the people who actually lived out this story. It's a portion of history that should not be forgotten!

We purchased this movie because my husband and I both had lived through a strike and the union helped our families to make it through and have better jobs in the end because of it. This is a very good film, not only because it is touching, but because it is true, in that people have had to endure such trying and violent times. These people are the reason that there are safe conditions and reasonable wages for working people today. This movie tells why we have these luxuries, and what these few people did to insure that there would be somebody there to look out for the working man, who before this time, was something that to a company was easier to replace than a mule.

  MATEWAN
Review created: 07/03/06

Being a West Virginian, I grew up with the storys of Matewan. It was such a needles fight, but to be able to live in company housing, you had to do what the company said, period. This is a good movie, a tad short on ALL the facts, but if you had it buy the book, it would take way too long to tell. This is an excellent movie.
