Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (DVD, 2004, Pan & Scan)

What is not to love about this movie? It has wonderful special effects, and is definitely worth buying and adding to your own home collection. Guys like the fighting, and the girls, well they get Russell Crowe.

The movie is set in 1805. Russell Crowe is Captain Jack Aubrey, the commander of a warship in the British Royal Navy on the hunt for a French war ship that poses a threat to the Royal Navy. However, the French ship sneaks up on the British ship in a fog bank and causes extensive damage to the ship.

The British are able to escape and regroup, and Captain Lucky Jack Aubrey chases the French ship over two oceans, finally catching up to to sink her in the Galapagos Islands where the climactic battle takes place.

Master and Commander is filled with some incredible battle sequences as well as fine acting by the entire cast. I Highly recommend this movie!

Master and Commander is an excellent film and I totally enjoyed the adventure!

WOW.

This film really makes you feel like you're on the high seas. Amazingly realistic in its depiction of maritime violence. The tall ships are glorious and part of another era. This is a guys film. Being stuck at sea for months on end really had to have been aweful at times. The film also explores the bold and caring aspects of maleness, and deals with tragedy in a realistic tone.

I only watched this on my little dvd player, but I image it would be very dynamic on a big screen, I'm only sorry now that I missed its theatrical release.

This is a great movie. If you are a history buff, and enjoy the high seas movies. This is one of the best I've seen in a long time. I was very impressed with this great ship. A must for all. Thank you.

This is a great movie and Russell Crowe really did a stellar job playing the captain. Excellent cinematography, and supporting cast as well. A must see for Russell Crowe fans.

i personally purchased this movie as a gift. there is a lot of action and fighting sequences, HOWEVER the movie is rather long and takes a long time to speedup.

Great scenes to show off the surround...like the cannon fire exchanges. I had the volume tooo loud and my sister got scared!(she's 53 yrs old) It's a pretty cool movie. Not extremely fast paced for the most part, but when the action kicks in, it's really there. Nice for a leisurely afternoon.

I think Russell Crowe is the best actor in the world. He can play almost any film role and give a Oscar caliber result. I can't say enough great things about him. I will watch anything he is in.

Good acting, storyline, and cast. The era has always been of interest to me, as I am an avid history fanatic. Russel Crowe's performance is astounding as the captain of a vessel chasing down an enemy ship to prevent it from spreading war to foreign waters. Don't pass this one up.

Engaging story, great action, believable acting, a quality film and appropriate for a wide audience. All in all a bright, exciting way to spend an evening.

A wonderful cinematic and classical Peter Weir film. I really liked the type of camera angles that were used and the musical score.

Good store, CD did not work well. Contacted them, got full refund credit including postage whit-out having to ship it back.

Good movie. It seemed to go from incredibly fast paced action to very slow plot progression. Other then that I enjoyed watching it very much and would do so again.

The movie brings the book alive! Well cast, and very well acted, though I thought the book presented Captain Jack somewhat taller, which after the first few minutes the craftmenship of the acting amusingly enough overshadows this minor disparity and you're literally sucked completely into the movie... Action throughout, complete with bloody battle scenes and near shipwreck, and although the interactions between the Captain and his freind the Doctor is clear, many of the political aspects of the story were cut out - no doubt to keep the movie within a normal sitting rather than a mini-series lenght. At first I thought that this was a dramatization of the first book in the series, which it is not - rather several books into the series. However, this is an all-round good action movie of an English Captain and his crew during a 1800's cruse to the pacific, well worth watching.
