Marty Is an Underdog and a Nice Guy Winner

This little movie will steal your heart. It's about a 1950s nerd (but not a real smart guy--just a nice guy, played by Ernest Borgnine.) He has everything going against him. Poor, living at home with his mother at the age of 34, unattractive he thinks. He has been rejected by girls so many times that he has practically given up. So one last time, his mother encourages him to go to the Stardust Ballroom. And there he is almost paid to take an "unattractive" girl home, but being a nice guy he refuses. But in the end he spends the evening with her and politely escorts her home.
What happens after that is full of irony. His once encouraging mother takes a dislike to the girl; his jealous friend doesn't like her either. His depressed aunt casts woe on the whole situation. His unhappy cousin played by Jerry Paris won't even listen to him.
What's a poor boy to do in this situation? Watch the movie "Marty" and see. You will be glad you did. At only 1.5 hours, this movie swept the Oscars of 1955: Best Picture, Best Actor (Borgnine), Best Screenplay (Paddy Chayevsky), and Best Director (Delbert Mann). Nominations went to Joe Mantell, Marty's jealous best friend (Best Supporting Actor), and Betsy Blair, the unattractive girlfriend who is really quite pretty (Best Supporting Actress.) And finally, this movie won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
This movie shows that you have to be your own thinker and make up your mind to find happiness yourself. It is a real daybrightener and a source of hope for all of us.
