Marley & Me by John Grogan (2005, Hardcover)

I read this book straight through, only pausing to wipe my eyes or blow my nose. An incredible good read that leaves one looking at life and love in a new light. This book reminds us that we are all indeed mortal. That our time on earth is brief and temporary. Every day is precious and should be cherished. Although I am a dog owner and dog lover, I found myself examining all of the relationships in my life after reading this book. We way to often judge, and find character flaws in the people around us, often the ones we love the most. What we should be doing is loving them.......unconditionally. A truly great read, even if you don't own a dog!

This is an excellent book that is well written and really gets to your heart. Brings you to a new appreciation for your animal or pet after reading just a chapter or 2! This is just a basic documentary of what John's and his wife Jenny's relationship with thier overactive , mentally unstable during storms, labador retriever dog is and becomes - Written in such a way that any animal or dog owner/lover can relate to. This is a true tear jearker at the end, so if you are a more sensative animal lover, beware.

I just finished Marley and Me last night. I picked it up last weekend at Barnes & Noble as I was walking near the magazines. The adorable photo on the cover caught my eye....they had a display of the book out in the open. Being an avid animal and dog lover, I couldn't pass it up.

Needless to say, I devoured the book in two days. I loved it. To me it was so refreshing to see such commitment in another dog owner. I have always believed that when you adopt a pet it should be part of the family, and it is a lifelong commitment. You don't give up and get rid of them, just because of hard times or problems.

I applaud Mr. Grogan, and his family, for being the kind of people who love and care for their dog friends and for writing such a heartfelt tribute to his pal, Marley. Pets ask for so little and return so much.

I have had many dogs and I always get a kick out of the commercial on TV for a new ziplock dogfood bag for a certain chow...they use the expression "Dogs Rule". How perfect. There is nothing quite like having a dog, whether they have impeccable manners or not.

I laughed and I cried and I understood everything that Mr. Grogan had to say. I also live in Florida so I felt a special connection to the Grogans when they were speaking of the culture here and the thunderstorms--and how dogs hate them.

All in all, Mr. Grogan's writing is clear and interesting and down to earth. I couldn't put the book down. It is a joy.

I even went so far and to visit the website he has listed in the book. There was an email address to write to him, which I did, and I was absolutely amazed when Mr. Grogan wrote back to me three hours later to thank me for my nice comments.

Do yourself a favor and read the book.....you'll close it in the end and your heart will feel like it is too large to fit inside your chest.

This was a great book! I couldn't see to put it down. I found myself finished within a matter a three days! This is by far one of the best books I have read in the past five years.

I loved the book Marley & Me by John Grogan. His writing flows and makes you feel like you are right there in the room with Marley. I read this book on my bus commute to/from work and there were many times that I laughed out loud because of Marley. This book makes you appreciate all the good and bad things about your dog.

This is the best book I have ever read. If you own a dog you will relate to this book in a very strong way. I laughed most of the way through the book and couldn't put it down. There are tears too as the writer describes his ending with his Best Friend. Loved it all!

this is a great book for all pet owners, especially if you have a lab. received the book from my daughter, read it and loved it. didn't want to loan out my book because my daughter signed it from her and her dog....purchased a new copy for a friend who also owns a yellow lab. sure hope he enjoys it as much as i did.....i am absolutely going through the exact same situations as in the book...can't wait to see the movie...

I have been meaning to read this book for a good while and just now had the time. It is a wonderful story for all dog lovers. I laghed and I cried and saw my own dogs in the story. I would reccomend it for all dog lovers.

The greatest book ever!!! If you love dogs and love to read can you ask for anything more from this book?

I read this thinking ...who in the heck would put up with all the crap that dog does.. without giving him away? I WOULD!! I have a collie/sheppard who is going on 13 with bad hips and is getting to be "stair challenged", and a beagle who made all my daughter's dolls' "PHISICALLY CHALLENGED" and I kept the dogs and got over being mad. I laughed and cried throughout this book. Situations were written about Marley in which we can relate. John Grogan has written what we usually keep secret to our spouses so THEY won't give the dog away!

This book was amazing. I have passed it on to three others already. It's a quick read because he does so well at keeping an audience. Anyone who has a heart for dogs, will be immediately captivated by John Grogan's portrayal of what pet ownership really is! I couldn't put it down, and the ending was to be expected but very heartwarming! I highly reccommed this book to anyone of any age.

I love canines, and what they teach us about love, patience and loyalty. Marley is a fine example of that. Great humor too!

How can one start to explain a book so great! Yes, I am a dog lover. Yes, I have a yellow lab that is almost the picture of Marley, but in convincing all my family and friends to read this, EVERYONE I know has related this book in some way to each and every pet they have owned. It's great to laugh out loud at a book and picture the characters so perfectly. It's even great to cry (actually sob) out loud too at the sad ending, but to relate is the best. I can not recommend this book enough to everyone! Just don't read it on a plane or in a quiet room--remember, belly laughing out loud and sobs! Thank you John Grogan for a wonderful read.

This is a warm and comforting book for people who feel guilty or ashamed of the depth of their love for their pets. If you can make it to the end of the book (i.e., if you're able to face the inevitable sadness), you'll feel incisive joy and some clarity on the reasons we invite animals into our crowded lives. Author John Grogan, a successful journalist, is surprisingly sentimental, verging on corny sometimes, but he regains his integrity with wit and the development of two strong characters (Marley and John). Sadly, the wife is vintage Stepford.

This book is so well written, Mr Grogan is truly a writer. Its like being there and seeing as it happens..yet Marley proves that no matter how doppie or wired and neurotic we all need loved..and were loved no matter what by our 4 legged children. Great reading for all ages!

A delightful and light hearted read, I thoroughly enjoyed Marley & Me. John Grogan's style is easy, almost conversational, and perfectly suited for juvenille reading.

I love reading any book about dogs. I can't say this is the best book I've ever read, but still I admire and respect Grogan for giving Marley a place in history and a tribute to honor the legacy he left behind.

As an advocate of dog rescue and a dog trainer, I was very disturbed by his method of training Marley with a choke chain, and can only hope Grogan gets better counseling on kinder ways to train an out of control, over exuberant canine.

Through it all, while not Grogan's biggest fan, Marley will always have a place in my heart, and for that I do thank Grogan for sharing with us Marley's spirit.

Read it for what it is - a loving tribute to a dog who only wanted to please his person, a dog who gave undying loyalty, a dog who understood better than man ever will, what it means to have a soul.

I would only ask that if you find yourself with a dog like Marley, get yourself some serious professional training from someone who will not consider a choke chain as a proper method of training.

This book is a must have for anyone who has ever had a dog! The Author is so expressive you can picture everything that is going on. If you have even thought this might be a good book, you are right!

I agree on the above review. This one has it's happy moments as well. I had to wipe away a tear or more, because I felt for John and his wife in the loss of their child and the joy when they were blessed with another child. Very well written. This dog was a blessing and a rascal.

loved it. laughed out loud, and cryed too. every pet lover would enjoy.I passed it on to many of my friends. grogan is a heartfelt writer. I felt i had lived thru some of the same things.

This book is one of my favorites. A beautiful story about a family raising their energetic lab from puppy to adulthood. Hilarious stories, well-written and you feel you really get to know the family and Marley. A must-read for any dog lover. I bought this one to give to my father for Christmas.
