Nintendo Wii: Mario Party 8

Mario Party is the game that has brought me back to
Nintendo. I originally discovered it back for the N64
and then I once again played it on the gamecube. When I
heard that they were making number 8 for the Wii I decided
to buy the entire system for that game.

Mario Pary games are like electronic board games. Up to
four people can play and you roll an electronic dice like
a board game. You then move on the board. At the end of
each person's board you play a "Mini-game". These mini
games are either 4 on 4, battle 4 on 4, cooperative teams,
or 1 on 3 games. You compete for coins that you can use
to buy stars during the game. The player with the most
stars & coin combination wins.

This game had 4 30+ year olds having a blast at my home!
It was beyond fun. We were giggling and moving like no
other party before.

Mario Party 8 takes great advantage of the Wii remote system.
At the start you have to swing your remote up to roll your dice.
You have normal pointing and moving motions along with a dart
throwing motion at points.

The mini games greatly use the controller. You are shooting,
balancing, lassoing, shaking, and so on! Great fun. :)

I was not disappointed. This is the second game that I have
purchased (and I rarely purchase games, only rent). I'm so
happy that I have a Wii now. :)

5/5 Fun for everyone!

  Mutliplayer is a blast!

I played Multiplayer for over four hours with three friends and the game was a blast. The mini-games were all fresh and didn't get repetitive at all, it was near-perfect. Doesn't even need the Nun chuck extension.

Fun, but only if you have 3 Friends over all the time

Mario Party has never been given GREAT reviews, but the gamers love it because it gives them a chance to get together with their friends. It's Deja Vu' again for Mario Party 8.

Mario Party 8 has kept it simple story wise this time around; There's a carnival, GO PLAY GAMES!

I'll start with the good. Playing with 4 human players is an absolute blast, and the boards all have different goals to achieve in order to win. The graphics have been updated nicely, and any game that incorporated DK as a space is awesome in my book.

However, sound is pretty dull, there aren't many "extra mini-games" to play with you mii, and my biggest problem of all; playing with the computer.

The dice rolls in Mario Party are no longer random or anything goes; it is obvious when the game is getting the computer out of a jam. Lets say your about to land on a star space, it's the comps turn and what do you know? They land on a VS space and take your money; making you unable to get the star that would win the game. This works the other way around as well, but I would like to see some real luck involved. Not computer calculated balancing.

The best part of Mario Party by far is the mini-games; some of them are amazingly fun with the Wii remote and I didn't find many sensor problems. This is also a problem however when playing duel matches. There are no longer mini-game battles after every turn. You have to land on a paticular space to play a 1v1 mini-game. In other word your only going to play a mini-game about 4-5 times a game. However when playing a battle royale Mario Party becomes what it's supposed to be. A mini-game festival with all sorts of different games and styles of game play.

Overall Mario Party is what it is, a party game, so pick this up, invite over three friends, and play until your arm falls off; then return it and get Warioware, trust me you'll enjoy it much more.

PARTY TIME! Un-bias review of Mario Party 8.
Review created: 06/05/07
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Although repetitive in nature, the Mario Party Franchise has been a booming business since its first release on the Nintendo 64. With a new game coming out every year like a sports franchise, the series has seen little change over the past 7 titles. Finally, with the next-gen revolution we see some large changes that make this ever-popular party game legend worth picking up for a second chance...Here's the scoop...

Pro's...

-- Great graphical improvement from the last installment.
-- NEW Wii CONTROLLER MINI-GAMES (can't stress enough how cool that is)
-- Even with one other person, this game is playable for weeks at a time.
-- Intuitive board game design keeps the competition high up until the very last minute.
-- Familiar characters in familiar settings. Always a plus.
-- Cheeky sound effects and music are reminiscent of classic Nintendo gameplay.
-- Fun for ALL ages.

Con's...

-- The same basic concept as all the other Mario Parties.
-- NO ONLINE PLAY (really big bummer)
-- There are already tons of mini-game collections for the Wii.
-- If you have no friends, this game is REALLY lame to play by yourself.
-- Guaranteed to start a fist fight when you accidentily punch your friend in the jaw with your wii-mote.

For playing video games with more than one person, it doesn't get much better than this. The energy that comes out of competing in such worthless little mini-games with a friend is dumbfounding. If you have at least one friend, and at least one wii, pick up this game and play it til your arms are tired from waving them around like a lunatic to earn coins and stars. ^_^ Happy Gaming!

This is the best mario party yet. Using the wii remote makes the mini-games really fun. This is one of the best multiplayer games for the wii out so far.

Fun, not amazing, but overall a great group game

It really bothers me that Mario is somewhat the face of Nintendo but didn't really blow me away with this one. First, it does not offer widescreen, which bothers me because usually groups of people play this game together (requiring a larger tv). Second, there isn't much Wii functions and playability like Rayman. The controller is used more like a classic controller than through motions and actions. When there are times you do use the controller in a non-classic way, you are moving it left to right (rowing your lilli-pad down a river) or pointing and pressing "A" (cutting the string in the guessing launch challenge). You would think Mario games would be the games that require more exciting controller features but not in this case.

Playability: 5 out of 5
Audio: 3 out of 5
Graphics (taking in consideration of Nintendo's capacity): 4 out of 5
Controls: 1 out of 5

But again, this game is a good group game. It will induce a lot of laughter and enjoyment. But it could provide so much more fun it the Wii-motes played a bigger and better role, rather than classic controllers. It is fun to see your friends and family look goofy, but maybe 9 will do a better job at this.

So... if you played Mario Party, then you know what this game is about. I like the new games they put in this series but whats up with the graphics? Its like a gamecube version and the graphics is the same. Which is understandable but i think they should have made it look somewut different. They made it semi 3d but could of made it better.

Overall the game play is good. Good for the family. I enjoy this game alot and really cant go wrong with buying and owning this game.

Played it for a few hours yesterday and it was fun. Uses the remote in different ways and the minigames are fun as usual. Haven't played in mutiplayer yet but I'm sure it'll be better than playing alone. My son had a blast playing it so I'm sure he's having fun now while I'm at work.

A Wonderful Board Game right on TV!

This game is Fabulous! It has all the fun of playing a board game but it is right on your television. (No little pieces to lose or step on later.) :O)
This is a game that if you have younger children they will be able to play the games as well as if you have older children. (Just like board games!)
My family LOVES this game...especially the soda shake-up game.
Once you start playing this game it doesn't take long to learn how to play it!

  Fun Games and Mini Games
Review created: 06/29/07

This game is a blast! The setting is a carnival with fun games and mini games. You choose where you want to play and can play 2 players against two of the computer's players. To play you travel through a game board collecting tokens and stars. You can use your tokens to ride on a dolphin, buy different types of candy, which allow you different game powers and more. The characters are cute--from Yoshi-type sharacters to Mario, Princesses, and Wario-types. Adults and kids will enjoy playing the game. The hand controls shake and vibrate along with the game. One of the best parts is when you race to shake a bottle of soda and explode it!

Mario Party...not so much of a party

So within a week I am now taking and selling this game at GameStop. It is completely too easy. The game is not very interactive. The minigames are pointless and rather boring. Here are a few examples fo the minigames: 1. You shake a can of pop to see who's pop will go the highest. 2. You try to get the hour and minute hands in the correct possition. 3. Dump sand on a scale to see if you can get it to weigh a certain amount. I was very dissappointed when I started playing this game. I have tried for a week to enjoy it, but it is one of the stupidest games I have ever played. This is definitely not a game to play by yourself.

I like this game because adults can play it with kids, kids can play it with each other or it can be played by one player- even adults play alone and enjoy it!
It can be a pretty long game if being played by more than two people but if only two are playig it can be made fairly short.
There are lots of games to play on this one disk. My whole family enjoys it!

  Mario Party 8 for Wii

I bought this game on a recommendations from a couple friends who really liked it. I do like the many different games that you play within the game. I don't like that things like the introduction takes a long time to get through and if you are playing with the computer it takes a long time between turns. Its definatly not a game that you can just play a quick game. All in all its an average to good game for me.

  Overall Good Game

I've always been a fan of the Mario Party series so I of course bought this on the first day it came out and played solo for a bit for the sake of unlockable things and whatnot to use with friends. It was fun at first but if you're playing alone it quickly gets boring. However, I have played it a lot with friends and it is VERY fun to play in groups! The minigames are really innovate and the graphics are warm and inviting as you'd expect from a Mario game. Overall, its so-so for single-player but very fun with family and friends.

  Fun alone, or with friends!

Fun alone, or with friends!
-The Good
-Variety of Playable Characters
-Gameplay
-Many Modes of Play
-Replay Value
-Vast Variety of Mini-Games
-Clever Use of the Wii Remote
-The Bad
-Lack of Useful Unlockables
-The Summary
-This game is a very good Virtua-Board Game. The main game play (Party Tent Mode) is basically this; you hit the dice, you move, you get money, you buy candy, you buy stars, and you play a mini-game, rinse and repeat. The occasional battle/duel mini-game happens, as well as events that are triggered by landing on certain spaces occur, but that’s it for main gameplay. All other areas are variations of this.
Except for the Minigame Tent. Here, you can duke it out with friends or computers in games in which you only use minigames. You can do that, or you can play any minigame freely in Free Arcade Mode.
