This is one of the best multi-player games of all time. Mario Kart 64, like its predecessor for the super nintendo, features a race and a battle mode. There are 16 race courses and 4 battles courses. My friends are divided as to whether race or battle mode is better. I know some people who prefer the cute graphics and handicapping that allows players of different levels to compete on race mode, and people who love the cut-throat hair-on-edge feeling of a good battle. In any case, the game works as before, where the screen divides into 4 quadrants and each player controls his player in his quadrant. The usual cast of characters is
here again, Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Toadstool, etc.

I think the handicapping is a little too prounounced in race mode. That is to say, if you get really far ahead of the pack, the powerup's you start receiving are terrible, like green turtle shells or banana peels. I know I know, the banana peel can be a lethal weapon, but only because if some does fall for a banana peel, the sheer hilarity of watching that guy sputter out of control and start cursing the living daylights is worth it. But here's the thing. If you are way in last place, you'll find yourself getting infinite mushroom after infinite mushroom, and pretty soon you're neck and neck with the first place guy. What this means is the way you drive for the first 3 laps doesn't really matter. So I feel like it disincents people from taking the race seriously the whole way through, and what ends up determining the winner is who is in 3rd place on the final lap and in a position to get the next infinite mushroom. On the flip side, is you can play with anyone, expert of beginner, and keep it interesting. That
can be nice if you have friends with lives who don't spend every hour trying to nail the shortcut in koopa beach, but want to be able to enjoy the wonders of rainbow road.

Battle mode is arguably how this francise made its name, and in 64, Nintendo ups the ante with multidimensional battle courses that span the highly claustrophobic (sky tower) to the cavernous (doughnut) to the labyrinth (the green level) to the all out jungle warfare (blockfort). The great thing about these levels is they offer something for everyone. If you are looking for a quick game before heading off to dinner, you can choose doughnut or the sky tower. If you are looking for all out combat, and don't mind a 30 minute
dogfight, you have blockfort and the green level to choose from. Each of these levels is so physically different that it affords so many different strategies for beating your opponents. I mentioned how funny it is when one of your friends slips on a banana peel in race mode. Well in battle mode, it is a hundred times funnier, since that means they lose a balloon and are much closer to defeat.

There is so much memorable stuff from this game, from racing backwards on the highway against traffic to morphing into a bomb once you are defeated in battle mode. From the golden age of the 64, this is a must have for any one who loves a good multiplayer game.

  Mario Kart 64

Mario Kart 64: also known as the ultimate game for any party. There are 8 different characters you can choose to play -- all of which are popular Nintendo mascots. Different players have different properties depending on who they are. For example, Bowser has slow acceleration, but can bump around people easily due to his massive size. There are 20 different courses -- 16 different racing courses and 4 different battle courses. In race mode, your must complete 3 laps in that course the fastest in order to win. However, in Battle mode, you must fight against the other players in order to win. Items can be obtained during a race that can be used to your advantage. For example, Turtle Shells can be used to throw at enemies, while Mushrooms can be used for a temporary speed boost. It's an extremely fun racing game with lots of comic mischief, making it one of the most fun games on the N64, and a MUST for any party.

Mario Kart 64 = Hours of Fun and Mario Karting
Review created: 09/28/05

What a game - Mario Kart 64 brings back such fond memories. A group of four of us sitting on a sofa, staring at some small TV divided into fourths and racing Mario, Luigi, Toad Stool, Donkey Kong and others around the Mario Speedway as we taunted one another and broke course records. This game is fantastic - and while its fun for single player mode (I entertained myself for an entire week trying to beat my personal records) - multi-player mode is what makes Mario Kart 64 special. The game is made for 'party' mode - the courses, the cheats, the gameplay are all fantastic. Well worth the couple bucks it will cost you on eBay.

  Great Game!!

This is a perfect game that you can play by yourself and with friends. There are different characters and different race tracks to pick from. The game also has on it time trails (It's kinda freaky when you race your "Ghost". Ghost is you from the previous time you did). The battle part is so much fun! You try to shoot balloons off your enemy before they get your ballons. They have different tracks on that also that you can pick from. If you like Mario and racing games, this is perfect for you! It's just an all around fun game to play. Plus its great for any age.

This was and still is a great game. In it you are going to be basically racing with all of the cool Nintendo characters. In the game you can race as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Toad, Peach, Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Wario.

There are about 20 different tracks that can be raced and the fun is just endless.

If you are looking to spend your money on something this would be the item to do so on.

WOW I LOVE THIS GAME. I still play it a decade after it came out. It remains the only N64 title I still play aside from BOND. Playing the same 16 courses over and over again never gets old. Every race entails excitement and compeition. Awesome easy to learn gameplay, very good 3D graphics, hefty aresenal of weapons to take out your opponents, and OVERALL TONS OF FUN. You can play this game with people of all ages. FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. Mario Kart is also very popular among college students. If you've never played this game before, buy it on eBay! No matter what new video gaming technology comes out, nothing can replace this timeless classic!

  Best Racing Game!

This game my favorite race game of all-time. This game has many different tracks to choose from that vary from the mountains to the ocean/beach to the city. There is about 8 different characters that you can pick from. While racing you can get fireballs and other special weapons to help you beat the other players. Every game is different and anyone can win any single race which is what makes this game so fun. This game should be approved for all ages as there really isn't any type of violence besides shooting coconuts at the other cars...LoL - Gene

This is an awesome game!! We kept our N64 just for this game alone. Me, Hubby and the 2 boys all race together and we have alot of fun with it! For the moms, steering is a challenge, but my kids laugh when I drive off the road or smash into the walls! Definately a winner of a game! New or Used!!

THE BEST RACING GAME FOR THE NINTENDO 64
Review created: 03/30/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great racing game still today. I can spend hours playing it by myself or bring the guys over for a battle royal. Cmon the graphics are state of the art (for the time) and it always brings back memories of my childhood. You can't not like Mario Kart. It would be quite awesome if you could take these Nintendo 64 games and play them multiplayer online. Mario Kart online with an 8 player race would be simply spectacular.

Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64) ~~ N64 Fun Family Race Game

16 courses of fun family racing, this game is fun for all ages. It is the games like this one that we still own and still play our N64 after all these years even though the family also owns the newer systems. If you have a young child find a used N64 for cheap and make sure you pick-up Mario Kart. It has to be in the top 100 video games of all times and I would not be surprised if it were in the top 10. CLASSIC. Enjoy!!

bought it for grandsons nintendo 64. great game, maybe a bit hard for him yet but he has a blast playing it. it has several options for racing arenas and choice of characters. I find it difficult to scroll to figures to race but may be operator difficulties as I don't have an instruction book. Overall very satisfied with the game.

Mario Kart will provide hours of entertainment for the entire family. The game allows up to 4 players at once and is easy to play. Mario Kart is great for gamers of all ages and has virtually nothing offensive in it.

The racing is great but my personal favorite is the battle mode!

  Fun Game!!!
Review created: 09/28/06
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Mario games are as addictive as any other franchise out there. The Mario Kart series is no exception to the plump plumber's charm. Mario Kart 64 is the second installment in the racing series and a fine sequel that comes recommended to any fan of Mario. The maps may not be as inventive as the Cube or DS versions and controls are not as sharp or drawing distance as far but this is still a great way to waste time with friends or all on your lonesome. But if money is in question, check out the other two before you buy this one. If you are a hardcore Mario fan you will probably have to have it anyway. I own this one myself and loved it until I spoiled myself with Double Dash. 3.5/5
