Movie Description
Sofia Coppola follows up her Oscar-winning LOST IN TRANSLATION with her most ambitious effort yet. Based on the book MARIE ANTOINETTE: THE JOURNEY by Antonia Fraser, Coppola's film infuses modern pop-culture elements into a regal, historical biopic, resulting in a strikingly original work. Kirsten Dunst plays Marie Antoinette, a 14-year-old Austrian who is about to wed France's next king, Louis XVI (a fattened-up Jason Schwartzman). Her new life is a constant barrage of pomp and circumstance, which baffles the otherwise ordinary teenager. While love has nothing to do with the union between Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, producing an offspring does. Unfortunately, Louis XVI shows no interest in having a physical relationship with his willing wife. Instead, Marie Antoinette begins to embrace her life of royalty, biding her time by shopping and partying and living the life of a spoiled teenager. As time passes, Louis XVI works out his problems and soon the couple has begun to bear children. But eventually, the impoverished French people become fed up with the disparity of wealth between the royal family and the average Frenchman, unleashing a revolt that would change the course of history forever.

Coppola's decision to use a modern pop-music soundtrack (Bow Wow Wow, the Strokes) is bold, to be sure, yet it is the type of personal choice that rings firmly true. Another brave decision was to let her well-assembled cast (including Judy Davis, Danny Huston, Rip Torn, Asia Argento, and Marianne Faithful) speak in their natural accents. Decisions like these are what make MARIE ANTOINETTE such a personal, distinct work, proving that Coppola only continues to grow as an artist.

This film was selected for inclusion in the 44th New York Film Festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

"Dreamy and decadent, the film is also touching, funny and bracingly modern."

      Another Mixed Up Movie....

    ... unfortuntely.

The opening sequence had Tina exclaim 'Paris Hilton of the day' !

The movie kept having modern day music interspersed within it,
    ruining it for us.

According to the Bonus Features this was because the writer/director
Sofia Coppola wanted the young generation of today to want to watch
    this movie.

Well it didn't work. Using modern day music in 'A Knight's Tale' did,
    but this sure didn't.

Kirsten Dunst was right on in her portryal of Marie Antoinette. She looked
the part and acted the part.

Others in the movie did their part also to right the movie, including Rip Torn, and Jason Schwartzman, but the blame for this movie not hitting the mark is the vision of the writer/director.

We both lasted through the movie, only because we didn't have any other
new DVDs to watch last night!

For Kirsten Dunst fans this movie is OK. For those that like period pieces
the costumes are beautiful and the scenes are stunning inside the real
    Versaille.

However, this movie is not one to watch to enjoy other than that,
another film where the writer/director is allowed to run with their
vision that makes it almost unwatchable for others!

There should be a Warning Label for these kind of movies!

Not very good for guys or girls

    Marie Antoinette

I didn't expect to like this movie when my girlfriend rented it... and I didn't. I watched the first 30 minutes and then went outside and cleaned my car while my girlfriend finished watching it.

She hated it too but kept hoping it would get better. There's not much I can say about this film because I only watched a portion of it, but my girlfriend's exact words were "What a BLANK waste of money" I asked her why she hated it so much and she replied with "It was stupid... nothing happens"

Anyways, take this review for what it's worth, but keep in mind that I usually give movies a chance, but I had to walk out on this one and my girlfriend usually loves movies like this and she hated it.

    Final Verdict:

    2/5

Worth buying?: Ha... hardly worth renting
