Mansfield Park (DVD, 2004)

Although this DVD was released as part of a set in 2004, it's the 1980s BBC production of Jane Austen's MANSFIELD PARK, and, thankfully, it's much more faithful to the book than the film of a few years ago. Since this is my favorite Austen novel, I was delighted to find the dramatization. The story itself is a little unlike Miss Austen's other books in that the heroine isn't a spunky, determined, fiery, charming character. Fanny Price is almost exactly the opposite - a timid, mouse-like little thing, taken from her poor home as a child and plunked down in her uncle's grand estate to be raised with her wealthy cousins. Is this an Austen heroine? Yes - her inward courage (it takes courage both to love and to stand away from the crowd) and her determination are just as great, although her struggles may be different, and she deserves her happy ending. Fanny Price is the Austen heroine for those women who don't sparkle and shine! BBC does a good job on their productions, although some may find this one a little stage-ish (I don't mind that). The costumes and settings are beautiful, and you'll be treated to some of the finest of British actors. Be sure to read the book, too!
