Mansfield Park (DVD, 2000)

My wife Tina loves the book series, but disliked this movie.

According to her the screenwriter/director took the story into modern times and
ruined it for fans of the book.

The movie totally perverted Fanny's character, and the movie ended up with a totally modern feminist view instead of the 1800's life.

For myself, the movie was OK, but what Tina told me of what should have happened made the movie lacking what the book was about.

I could understand her reasons to dislike the movie, sometimes the screenwriter or the director takes liberties with the book they are basing the movie on, and change it to their viewpoint.

Sadly it appears that was the case in this movie....

I am a Jane Austen fan and try to watch everything that is based on her books. I enjoyed this movie but it is not very true to the book. If you are a stickler about a movie being true to the book you may not enjoy the movie.

I liked the actors used for this version. I thought they worked very well together.

There were two things I did not like at all, one was semi-nudity in a scene, portraying something that did happen in the book, but we didn't need to see it and the other was showing detestable drawings that showed the Uncle in a very bad light, this was not in the book and I failed to see any reason for it. Because of these two scenes I will not let me daughter watch this movie.

This is a movie that I purchased, because I have the entire collection of the Jane Austen Books and Films. This is the worst of all the renditions of her books. I was appalled at the "creative licenses" the writers took with this story. What should have been a sweet story turned it a movie I would not want my daughters to watch. It is not true to the book or to the author intended vision at all.
There scenes in there that were very provocitive and left little to the imagination. Let me just say, if this is your favorite story, don't buy this movie for the enjoyable experience. Purchase instead the PBS Version with Billie Piper, or even better the BBC version!!

I had rented this before reading the novel by Austen. On its own, it is entertaining and a well made movie movie. But, if compared to the novel...well, the director added "Based on the novel, letters and diaries of Jane Austen" for a reason! It embellishes - and that is being kind - and removes major characters (Fanny's brother William, for one!). Added to the plot are references to the slave trade and its connection to Sir Thomas's holdings in Antigua, completely changing our opinion of his character, and a diversion from the story itself. Maybe Jane Austen was an abolitionist, but she didn't mention this in her novel and I feel it is too distracting from her intent of the book, due its strong content. The length of the novel must have presented a major problem for condensing into a movie, but to add plot at the expense of character development and entire characters was a poor choice.

In summary - Austen fans and purists will hate this movie or at the least find it frustrating. People who like historically based romance movies will like it. And if you are both, then ignore that it is supposed to be based on the Austen novel.

This is my favorite Jane Austin story, and the movie is wonderful. Great acting and such a good story! This is one fo my all-time favorite movies. Five stars*****!

I bought this because we really like Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice and thought this might compare but in one watching I was not as impressed as with the other two. It is ok and might grow on us. We'll see.

If you're looking for a good version of the Jane Ausen Novel... This isn't it. But it *is* an amazing movie especially for Austen fans! The Sceenplay writers decided to make the heroine more like Austen herself rather than her literatary character. This movie is a well done historical comedy that even people who swear they hate books or history will love! A good movie for anyone to own.

I bought it and loaned it to 2 of my friends. We are in a book club and Mansfield Park was chosen. Time was running short.... OK we cheated. I listened to the abridged version of the audio book and another read the first 150 pages of the book. We know that liberties were taken. But the feel of the story was right.

We know why it was a lesser Jane Austen, there was no humor. So don't get it expecting Emma, Sense & Sensibility or Pride and Predjudice. But it was good on its own and the three of us enjoyed it.

First let me start off by saying, I own everyone of Jane Austin's books and movies. This is one of my Favorites. I feel this movie is easy to follow. It has lots of great characters and was filmed very well. Some of the earlier movies were a little sketchy, bad filming, inexperienced actors, etc. However this project was top rate!! This sticks close to the book and is very entertaining. I wouldn't recomend your little ones watching this, because it does have some "adult" content!! I loved this movie and would definitaly recomend you purchase it ~ Jane Austin fan or Not ~ You will love it!!

It came quicker than i expected which is great! There were no scratches on the disk and it plays with no problems. Overall, i'm very pleased.

This is a wonderful movie that does not get enough recognition. If you like Sense and Sensibility or Pride and Prejudice you will love this Mansfield Park!

Of course I am bias when it comes to anything JANE! This adaptation of the book is well acted I think. Well worth purchasing for your collection.
I've had the VHS for a long time, broke down and got it on DVD finally.
If you like back in the day movies you'll like this one.

This movie was good, but the characters were more interesting in the 2008 version. The story line is appealing especially if you aware of the living during conditions during such times.

Product was in perfect condition, delivery was prompt and the process was very easy. Will look for this business for my future media purchase - recommend it.

love this movie and all of jane austen's works in general. another great film besides one of the many modeled after one of her books is becoming jane, though not entirely true still a great example of the time period she wrote in.

The worst thing you could say about this adaptation of "Mansfield Park" is that, in trying to appeal to modern sensibilities, it fails to be true to the spirit of the original text. The tone of Austen's novel was subtle; this film adaptation is anything but. It also takes far too many liberties with the original plot.

To enjoy this film, it's best to view it as a modern re-telling of Austen's novel rather than a faithful adaptation, in the same way that the film "Clueless" is a modern re-telling of "Emma".

The CD arrived promptly in excellent condition. I bought it to complete my colleection of Jane Austin CDs. I love it. That is it so I'm not sure how to write 100 characters.

I love both versions but if I had to pick one I would choose this version. Highly recommended to all Jane Austen fans.

this version of mansfield park is the best one avaliable. the acting is better than the bbc and a&e versions, and it is very tastefully done. there is one scene that i wish they had left out, but on the whole a really wonderful movie.
