Not A Comedy As the Trailer Made It Out To Be....

Not A Comedy As the Trailer Made It Out To Be.... But a thoughtful and moving film.

We figured to have a Robin Williams comedy to watch last night, instead it turned out to be a hybrid movie... not for sure what genre to place it in!

Robin turned in an excellent performance.
Christopher Walken played a good role as his manager.
Laura Linney came across well as the pivotal person in the election.
Jeff Goldblum played a bad corporate executive very well.

The plot was believable, the action kept the movie going.

A pretty good flick considering it wasn't what we thought it would be!

Man of the Year

Robin Williams is typical Robin Williams with his jokes and his fast talking and all that. He's great as News Show Comedian (ala Colbert) who runs for President.

Man of the Year features a well written story and a star studded cast. It has its share of laughter and mystery and it features Christopher Walken, which is never a a bad thing.

I really enjoyed this movie, a lot more than I thought I would, and I highly recommend it to anybody who loves Bill Mahrer, Stephen Colbert, or Jon Stewart. It's a great look into what Politics would be like if a comedian ran for office.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Worth buying?: This is a tough one, while I absolutely loved it the first time, I'm not really that pumped to buy it... watch it first before buying just in case!

  Finally Some Decent Political Humor

This film isn't always laugh out loud funny, so much as ironic. But I did scoff, snicker, and chuckle enough times to agree that it is a comedy, although it also has some strong dramatic elements, and a couple of hints of thriller.

Plot in a nutshell: think Jon Stewart runs for president, and wins due to a computer glitch. The woman who finds the glitch is set up and fired from the company that makes the computer voting program, and maybe worse. The comedian cum politician learns from this woman that the glitch exists, and has an moral crisis (yes, this is where the film becomes unbelievable, heh).

I don't think this movie would have been quite as good as it was without the great cast. Robin Williams is, of course, over the top - you can see smoke emanating from his ears during the serious parts of the film, but it makes sense with this script; it works. Laura Linney is great, again - I really like her work. And Christopher Walken is Christopher Walken. There's nothing else to say on that score. All of the supporting actors come together nicely, and the casting always seems appropriate.

Anyway, the main reason I like this film is that it's one of the very, very few pieces of political satire that manages to remain somewhat neutral toward real-world politics. Both sides (Democrats and Republicans) get their share of bearing the brunt. I may be unique in thinking this, but I get very tired of so-called comedies that end up being stages abused for the purpose of laying out the writers' personal politics, and attacking those whose politics differ. Man of the Year is advertised as a comedy, and it actually was one - not a Michael Moore documentary with a laugh track inserted (like some so-called comedies these days).

I definitely recommend you see this film. It's not going to change your life, but it's light-hearted, and pretty darned good. My kind of movie!

Man of the Year is a Politics As it Should Be

The first twenty minutes is a slow ride, and makes you wonder just what you are in for. But, let me say, it gets much better as you get going.
The story line is about Robin Williams, a political satirist and comedy show host, who makes an off the wall comment that he should run for president - and next thing you know, he is on the campaign trail. His manager is portrayed by Christopher Walken.
Anyway, as Williams is on the campaign trail he breaks into his comedy routine taking over the presidential debates with his rude humor. A lot of his cracks make great sense, and should open the eyes of any politician, and get them thinking.
The love interest develops with a girl who works for the developers of the new voting machines, and discovers a glitch in the system that could throw the upcoming election. You can probably guess the rest from there.
If you like Robin Williams, you should see man of the year. Just remember - Don't give up, itg gets a whole lot better as the movie moves on.

Man of the Year (Robin Williams)

I like everything that Robin Williams does, whether it's a story about a beloved literature teacher, a real-life doctor, or an alien from another planet. This movie is no exception, although perhaps (for me) it was almost too possible, given a few recent presidential elections. He portrays a talk-show host who is mistakenly elected president. The ending is a bit anti-climactic, but is generally very funny. I give it 2 thumbs-up!

  Robin William's best

I'm not much of a Robin Williams fan but 'Man of the Year' is his quit entertaining. It's funny and touches on some of the real problems with politics. It doesn't try to sway you in your political views but at the same time recognizes the hypocrisy in our Government officials. Robin has a fine performance in his role of an "average Joe" sick of the BS in our political system. Once he learns he is not alone he embarks on an improbable task of being elected President. Enroute to his election you see the comedic brilliance of Robin Williams as he obviously improvises in several scenes.

This movie shows us just how out of touch our people in the United States is with what this country stands for. They elect a comedian to be president and Wow he really wants to make a difference. It also shows us how corrupt some business people are in this world.
LETS TAKE BACK THIS COUNTRY FOR THE PEOPLE>

GOD BLESS AMERICA

First got this movie through net flicks and loved it so I ordered it off of ebay. I liked how the movie talked about real issues but not enough to make you bored to tears. The movie is a little slow but has a lot of funny parts!

  Not Robins Best work!!
Review created: 03/02/07

Robin Williams fans may consider this a bit of an over hyped let down. It has its moments but overall a bad attempt at political comedy. I was anxious to see it just because of Robin Williams but if you want laughs just buy RV!!
