This is a well crafted film of imperial high adventure.

I really enjoyed this Rudyard Kipling tale of high adventure beyond the edge of then known western knowledge. It tied together ancient and modern mysticism in a land that still fills the headlines of today. The human character flaws of ego and greed result in the ultimate downfall of the charming adventurers.

Grand epic al la Lawrence of Arabia, or any grandious 40's adventure. Much panorama of the Hindu Kush, and trememdous acting by Connery and Caine. Not for the politically correct.-Read the short story first

This adventure/comedy starring Michael Caine and Sean Connery is well written, superbly acted, and fun to watch. A mixture of Masonic ritual, military discipline, and fierce determination to live their lives their own way, brings Connery and Caine to Rudyard Kipling's door - and beyond into the northern Indian frontier where fueding tribes accept Danny (Connery) as a god and elect him to lead them to thier promised greatness. Christopher Plummer plays an acerbic and reluctant Kipling, and Caine's gorgeous wife Shakira is seen naked.
The twist in the tail is unexpected and highly original.

Wonderfully charming performances by Connery and Cane; leave your liberal conscience behind on this one however. Best scene is the "marching in step" confrontation with an officious British administrator (sorry for the oxymoron). Ford's direction is in the tradition of the greatest of the directors of old Hollywood, as well as his subject matter. Great story for "boys" of all ages!

The last great adventure picture ever made. Casting (Connery, Caine, and Plummer) could not be bettered or equalled.

This is a great Kipling tale well played by Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Christopher Plummer and a cast of others. Too bad they don't make them like this anymore!

  Still packs a punch
Review created: 04/04/08

With the powerhouse acting of Sean Connery and Michael Caine, set in Kipling's world of arcane and remote Indian religions of over a century ago, the magic never stops. The unstoppable and unflappable pair of adventurers, minus the artificial stimuli of the post-cable era movie-making we see today makes the heart soar, and, eventually, break. John Huston's masterful directing lets us see the characters develop and unfold, as they head, unswervingly, into the headlights of the oncoming truck, undaunted by either circumstance or their own flaws. It's a crime that it's not really in circulation. More people should see this film.

Great adventure movie with Sean Connery.
Review created: 02/05/08

This movie directed by John Huston and starring Michael Caine and Sean Connery is base on a Kipling story. It is a great character piece about two men who set out in the late 1800's to conquer an area last conquered by Alexander the great. The characters are well developed and the action is fast paced. For an older movie it holds it's own with most contemporary action movies. It is one I highly recommend. If you decide to get it I don't think you will be disappointed.

Great story of good intentions gone awry in exotic location. Two of my favorite British actors, with references to historical events; it engages the brain.

The Man Who Would Be King

Set in the reign of the British Empire, this movie follows two
men who are up for high adventure and excitement. Lots of great
scenery, good plot and two well known actors make the time fly when
watching it. Kipling's writing is at his best, I think in this one.
The movie is layered, has deep characters and just enough humor.
The author, being a Freemason, weaved in some facinating aspects from
the group.
