Although I had waited for this game to come out forever, I still waited and bought it on ebay just to save a few bucks and boy I'm glad I did. This game is terrible. Instead of improving playability and glitches from last year, 2k sports instead added new controls that are harder to use than last year and did something to the graphics to where the game is constantly jerky and lags. They recycled the same boring commentary from last year and as far as I know the same stupid baserunning and fielding glitches still exist. The only good thing they did to the game was update the rosters. Instead of addressing these issues they just added a bunch of bells and whistles like being able to watch your bullpen. I wish now I would have kept my PS2 with MVP '05 which was ten times better than this crap! I played this game twice and only finished one game, got pissed off, and now it's back on ebay with no reserve. I don't care what I get out of it as long as somebody wants it. I wish they had The Show for the 360. I will never own another 2k game in my life!

  OK but not great

Was looking forward to this for awhile - I have to say there are positives but many negatives though. Let's start with the good stuff.

1. I like the new pitching. Much better than just pushing one button. You move the right stick in different directions and have to time it correctly or you throw a meatball which is then deposited into the outfield seats by the opposing hitter.

2. The swing stick is pretty fun. Again, you have to make two movements with the right stick in order to hit. Better, in my opinion, than hitting one button.

3. The new throwing is solid. You have to hold down the right stick with which base you want to throw to, and you have to time it correctly or you'll throw it in the dirt or over someone's head. Again, better than just hitting a single button.

Now for the bad...

1. No updated graphics and no updated commentary. They at least could have had Joe Morgan say something different this year. Come on!

2. Seems like the game tries to play quicker than the graphics can keep up. The screen is constantly skipping around and freezing for a second or two. Sports games need to flow well.

3. Online play is useless. As another reviewer said, you're basically playing an entirely different game when you play online. You have to start your swing while the pitcher is in his wind-up, which causes you to swing at a lot of bad pitches. On top of that, the game plays even slower. A friend of mine and I bought the game basically just to play online and after one game, we gave up.

In my opinion, this is a $40 game at best. Of course I paid $60 and it doesn't come anywhere close to competing with other games as far as online gameplay goes.

This game is very good. Every player has his own stance; every pitcher has his own delivery and own style. The graphics are very good; the sound of the ball off the bat is sweet. This game is a very hard game for beginners, but once you get the knack of it, you can play very good games in which the computer will play hard against you, but you can beat it. I don't know if this sounds weird, but I even like the line that is under the ball when you hit it. I can hit more with some hitters than with others and that could happen to anybody. This is a game that for me it'll become a classic. I don't know if someone can agree with me, but I really like this game. Thank you for reading this review.

  Must have the book.

I bought it without the book and I've had issues picking up the controls. I'm unable to find anything on the game, other than the controller layout (which only tells you which buttons to use, not how to use them). I had to use the "Classic" Batting and Pitching in order to play at all. Using the the thumbstick isn't self-explanatory.

It is adequate with good graphics, but irritating control issues. If you can get it for a VERY good price, it may be worthwhile. Otherwise...keep looking.

  Awesome Baseball game!!!

Not quite as great as Playstation's "The Show" series, howevere it is very good. The franchise mode is very good but the Home Run Derby is tough. Gameplay is very easy with the new "Precision Pitching and Swinging" however, if you'd like it a little easier classic settings can be set. The game is very good and the graphics are phenomenal. Good buy!! I recommend it.

Right off the bat, this is the only baseball game you can buy right now for the xbox so if you want a baseball game you HAVE to go this route. Now as far as the look of the game it's great. Very realistic and smooth. Play-by-play is great too. Controls are different using the sticks, but you can switch it back to "classic" and just use the buttons to hit, throw, ETC. Pitching is fun too, the catcher calls the games and sets up where he wants you to pitch it (although I haven't figured out how to shake him off). Overall a good game...not the greatest baseball game (that belongs to the EA MVP series). If you can pick it up for under $20 (I got mine for $12) then buy it.

  MLB 2K8 Gameplay

The game itself isn't the best game around. The graphics and gameplay are sketchy. It seems like 2K Sports rushed in the making of this game, the only thing is, is that it is the only realistic game for the 360 Franchise, the price @ 19.99 is very accurate, to the game itself. An average game at best.

The graphics are excellent, and the players are animated to mimick the actions of the individual players. However, the game is extremely difficult to learn. The pitch controls are amazingly complex, and the controls for batting are not much easier. Even in rookie mode, the players give no leeway.

This game is incredibly beautiful, the graphics of the stadiums inside and out seem perfectly measured. The game performs smooth plays and the new intuitive pitching and batting will get you involved in the game, pressing the "A" button doesnt perform every move (pitch, hit, field, run)

It's a whole other way of playing a baseball game on a video game console. Once you get used to the pitching/batting/fielding you'll love throwing inside fastballs, getting that double play, catch on the fence or bunting to advance your player...

If you want a great baseball game, this is it.

  Very Disappointing

I was extremely disappointed after finally getting this baseball game. This game has so many GLITCHES in it, picture , sound. Perhaps they should have delayed the introduction alittle longer , and perfected it. These errors in the game design itself take away the enjoyable aspect of a baseball game.
At first I thought it was just me, but after looking elsewhere my feelings are shared by many others.
Maybe 2009 will be the game??

  Sweet and Sour...
Review created: 04/07/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Let me start by saying that I have been a huge fan of the 2K Sports games since they first appeared on the Sgea Dreamcast.

MLB 2K8 boasts incredible visuals and sound, awesome options, and an unfortunately complicated play.

Visuals: Ever been to a real ballgame, or even seen a professional telecast on your television, that's what MLB 2K8 looks like!!! The on-field players are crisp and clear in every respect, the spectators are all 3D and quite active - just like real game audiences. The field, stadiums, and surrounding environment were spectacular sights indeed.

The only issue I had with the visuals, and this is being rather nit-picky, is that several audience members within a small area would be perfoming the exact same moves, dressed the exact same way, at the same exact times. A little more random-ness would have been nice here.

Sound: The stadium PA, spectator, in-game sounds were right on. The game allows for you to customize the stadium music if you wish, but has some appropriate material on-hand as a default.

The one thing I thought should have been done better was that random localized words thrown into the audience sounds. For example...in Saint Louis, we are very familiar with the Mississippi River and the Arch (obviously). These words, or ones like them, are inserted into each stadium's audience tracks to make it feel more real or familiar. Anyone paying attention will notice this and most will find it annoying at best.

Options: All of the usual options are in this one...quick play, season, VIP, Home Run Derby, etc. Play the way you like, because 2K Sports thought of you when making this title.

My main issue with the options may be 1) There may just be too many options - confusing many, or 2) Although good intentions were meant, batting and pitching have become steadily more difficult - making playing a simple game of baseball, as difficult as (or maybe more than), the real thing. It took me quite a while to learn the pitching system, and I am still learning how to bat well enough to hit enough balls to register RBI's. Part of the issue is me - I got used to the 2K5 version (not compatible to the XBOX 360 which I now own), and part of it is 2K Sports for over-tinkering with the system.

One last note, there is what is called the "classic" play style option. This is supposed to allow those used to the older system to continue playing in the style to which they are accustomed - not exactly. I cannot bat the same way I did for the 2K5 version. Yes, the one-button control is there, but I am luck to hit past the infield - a problem not encountere in the 2K5 version. So, if you liked the old batting system, you are about to get the shcok of your life.

Enough said about that...

In all, MLB 2K8 is a solid game with a few minor glitches that prevent a gamer from truly enjoying the simplistic game of baseball.

And 2K Sports owns the exclusive rights to the MLB license until 2012...

If you can get past the negative issues, then MLB 2K8 is a solid and well-rounded game.

***Ratings (on scale of 10, 10 being best)***
Graphics: 9.5
Sound: 9.5
Gameplay: 7.5
Overall: 8.8 (yes, an average of the above scores)

I absolutely love this game. The one compliant I would have is that it is a little choppy with the graphics. All in all, this is so worth the money and very realistic. Best MLB game I have ever owned!

I was extremely excited when I picked up 2k8, that didn't last very long. I just flat out was disappointed with this game. The new hit stick was okay, but provided way to many homeruns once you got it down and the pitching was far to sensitive. The idea behind the pitching is a good one, it needs to be refined. Having you use a thumb stick to pitch and when you make one mistake the ball is in the stands. I did an entire fantasy draft, since I'm a Pirates fan, and I was losing games 16-4 with the regular team. All the time I spent doing the fantasy draft, I started my first game and that game just ended 16-14, with me hitting more homeruns. The game has potential but needs refined.

This game is very fun but has some issues that can hamper the playing experience. It has a cool new pitching system and hitting is a lot better than last years. There are some bugs with fielding and the on-line play is not very good. A $39.00 buy on ebay is definitely the way to go.

This game is very very disappointing. I was looking forward to this game for months and when i finally got it and put it in, i was pissed off ever since. ok we will start with the graphics. the graphics do not look like they were updated since last season, they are just ok graphics. they are nothing that will make you say, oh my got that looks so real. the ball parks i dont think look the best but they are ok. also what bugs me is the people in the crowd. they put like 4 or 5 people per row and the people have enough room to pretty much lay down. its lame, the crowd should be alot bigger. ok now on to the pitching. pitching controls this year suck. you use the right stick. it is the most difficult type of pitching i have ever done. i am terrible at it. the need to just do the power meter pitching like on the EA baseball games. so pitching is horrible. now for batting. batting is ok. nothing specail. you still have the swing stick. its ok. there really is not alot of talent into batting though. ok now fielding. fielding is lame. the graphics are terrible and frame rate sucks. it feels like i am playing a game on gamecube or something. and i can never hit the cut off man. ok, now for online play. this is worthless. it is unplayable. the delay is the worst of its kind. you have to start your swing before the pitcher releases the ball. ya so can swing at ball after ball after ball. i would say dont bother buying this game. i own it and now i am thinking about getting rid of it even though i really wanna play a baseball this year. this game will only disappoint
