For every idea that most artists have, Steve Cobby and Dave McSherry have another fifty--and they're eager to cram as many of them as possible into each CD. With every album, Fila Brazillia pries open the lid on another cache of downtempo riches, laying bare glittering troves of placid grooves and joyous melodies. The sumptuous Fila Brazillia catalog is the backbone of Hull's Pork Recordings, the excellent label founded by Cobby and DJ Dave Pork.
Call MAIM THAT TUNE's laid-back confections "triphop" if you must. Fila Brazillia's music is definitely a trip. MAIM dances across oceans and skirts categories--from the African overtones of "A Zed And Two L's" to the tantric techno of "Slacker"--in pursuit of the ultimate eclectic chill-out vibe. They keep finding it, too. The vaporized salsa-soul of "Leggy" and the rarefied funk of "At Home In Space" and "6ft Wasp" ride the breeze like perfumed mist. "Subtle Body" is flash-frozen slo-mo house so airy that it all but evaporates, and the gently dubbed-out reveries of "Harmonicas Are Shite " and "Extract Of Pineal Gland" are bliss itself.
