  This movie changed her life

I met a woman named Renee who recommended I see this movie. Renee was a staunch supporter of the United States Constitution and she never knew how long she would have to work for her freedom.

Renee spent three years of her life as a victim of the twentieth century’s first forced labor camp in Mexico City. After her escape, she moved to Los Angeles. It was here that she heard of The Magnificent Seven.

Renee needed hope. And the promotional billboards for this classic film seemed to line almost every busy street in LA. This experience truly spoke to her. Renee decided it was time to procure a ticket to see this controversial film and happened to find herself sitting next to Steve McQueen himself in the movie theater. They laughed a little, but mainly due to Steve McQueen quoting the script scene by scene as they watched the movie together.

McQueen and Renee began to date. She told me that if I ever met a star from an old western film, be it guy or girl, to run in the opposite direction and fast. That is, of course, unless it's Charles Bronson.

See this movie!

I love old westerns and have seen many and this is my top pick. It has several big name stars and has an excellent story line. This is one I watch over and over. I bought this DVD too because it tells about the making of the movie, very interesting.

One of the best Westerns ever made. Not just the story line of seven gunfighters that try to help a small Mexican village from bandits, but the music is Oscar Winning. The cast couldn't be better if you don't mind Yul Brynner as a bald cowboy. The hat never leaves his head, but the casting of Steve McQueen and James Coborn and Eli Wallach was near genius. It's dated, true but watching these actors before they hit their prime is worth the watching. This was Charles Bronson's first movie and you can see how the moody Mr. Bronson was going to become a big star. I loved it and am very proud to now own a copy.

I bought this movie because it was based on The Seven Samurai, one of my favorite movies. It was not as good as the original, but it was still a movie I would watch again.

The Mediocre Seven, or was it Six; is anyone counting?
Review created: 06/07/06

Important to see because it is become a cinematic touchstone, but man is the acting awful except for Eli Wallach. He basically established his Good, Bad and Ugly "Tuco" character here and then cleaned it up a tad for the later movie.

The Elmer Bernstein soundtrack is a nice distraction from the corny dialogue and wooden actors. The DVD case is pretty, too, and makes a good coaster.

  Classic western with stellar cast!!!!!!!!!!!
Review created: 10/28/09

One of the finest westerns ever made with a superb cast of well known actors. The story is actually based on an older Japanese story about seven samurai who avenge their master's death. The story is similar in nature and outcome. The new remastered film is very good and a classic that can be watched for many years to come. For well acted westerns I also recommend "The Wild Bunch", and "The Professionals." Three of the most well made westerns from the past.

  The Magnificent Seven
Review created: 10/25/09

Fed up with being brutalized and impoverished because of outlaw
raids on their village by a merciless outlaw leader - played by
Eli Wallach ( The Holiday, The Hunter, The Misfits, Genghis Khan,
etc), the besieged citizens of a small Mexican town hire seven
American gunslingers to stave off the marauders once and for all.
Yul Brynner (Westworld, Catlou, Cast a Giant Shadow, The King and
I, etc) leads the band of mercenaries which includes several other
big stars of the time or of later years including Steven McQueen
(Tom Horn, The Great Escape, Bullitt, The Sand Pebbles, etc);
Charles Bronson (Breakheart Pass, Death Wish, Mr. Majestyk, The
Mechanic, etc); James Coburn and Robert Vaughn. The seven mercenaries
make bullets and powder the reward for the bandits when they enter
the town and action and adventure movie lovers will enjoy the fight
and shooting scenes as well as the planning that goes on to meet the
attack by the bandits. This movie was nominated for an academy award
in 1960 for Best Movie and Best Actor--and the movie has long ago
gained classic western status. Most Western lover will certainly enjoy
this one a great deal and will get a full night of entertainment out
of it--even if you have saw it before.

  The Magnificent Seven Special Edition
Review created: 10/16/09

Here is a definitive western classic put on the screen as a kind of western version of the Seven Samurai. It was fascinating watching the behind the scenes and how the movie was made. A true western classic everyone should watch except maybe young children due to the violence.

  A CLASSIC?
Review created: 05/01/09
by:

After seeing the "Seven Samurai", felt I should see how Hollywood tried to pull off this movie. I enjoyed seeing some of my favorite stars, but overall the story was tame by modern standards and i felt that parts had been cut that would have delved into some of the sub-plots of the past lives of the '7'. But it's supposed to be a Western classic so thought we should take a look.

Great movie! A classic tale of good vs evil, right vs wrong, and those who live their lives by the gun. This movie was based on "The 7 Samurai," another fantastic movie that is very much worth seeing. I recommend seeing BOTH movies. Enjoy!

  The Magnificent Seven Review

The Magnificent Seven is cool. The guys are good together. But they try to be too Japanese, when they are really Americans. I mean, who uses a stiletto in a gun fight. Someone tries to pull a knife on me, in the Wild West, when I have a gun in my holster, I shoot him. Isn't that how psychos were treated at that time? Although this seems like a small point, the film actually hinges on this brief one on one encounter because this character, this James Coburn character, is the best fighter in the film, the "Go to" guy. This is his introduction. This "Matt" character or whatever his name is, belongs in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
