  Great first GPS

I really like this unit, but wanted to integrate my GPS to my computer and this one didn't have a USB cable. I upgraded to the 400 model and found that the upgrade wasn't worth the extra money. The software is less than desirable and mine didn't link up very well using the USB to Google Earth Plus. This unit has a better compass and although needs replacement batteries (18hrs of run time), has an off-timer so you don't burn through them. All-in-all, stick with the 300 model or go for the 500 model that has USB and a color screen.

  Magellan eXplorist 300

I recieved this as a gift and intially fell in love with it. But after using it a bit, I found it was a middle of the road GPS unit. It fits nicely in the palm of your hand and is rather durable as all of the eXplorist models are. This unit is not rechargable, and has a battery life of around 18 hours. It comes ready to roll, with only a few minutes needed to set it up. I found after using it while driving, it will sort of stray off the actual highways you are driving on, so I think the accuracy is not quite what they claim. You can zoom in quite a bit, and I think it gets down to 250 foot intervals on the screen. It has an orange backlight that works pretty well. The buttons and 'joystick' button are pretty easy to use and are quite easy to navigate with. It also is a portable weather unit of sorts. Tracks barometric pressure and temp. All in all it is a fair entry level unit, but if you are looking for something more that has downloads available this is not the unit to buy. Look up a few models; the 400, 500 and 600 models. I used this unit for 6 months and gave it to my father because he likes gadgets like this. I had to download and print off the manual for him, and it was 80 some pages long!! The manual is pretty easy to follow and like I said once you get it set up, and use it a little bit, it is easy to use.

Awesome Accurate in woods , I need basic GPS and i won it for normal price , also purchased special cable which can connect this device to PC , you can search Ebay for this item , and if you want with that cable you can download maps and other functions. Truly said this device is not so simple as it seems , but for me this one is very helpfull , I like it.

  GPS deal cancelled.
Review created: 06/09/06
4 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I won the bid, tried to make payment through PayPal and got an error message stating that the seller does not accept payment from non USA accounts.
I e-mailed the seller to inform him of this so he could make some kind of arrangement for me to pay and get the item ASAP as I needed it for an Enduro race is was taking part in 2 weeks from then, he then replied to me that he will be going to Europe foe 2 or 3 weeks and will sort it out as soon as he got back.
This was totally unacceptable, so I e-mailed him that he can cancel the deal as I needed the item ASAP and it was not my fault that my payment did not go through, he did not mention anywhere on his auction page that he does not accept payment from South Africa.

So I then bid on another GPS, a SportTrak Pro, which I won and paid for more 5 weeks ago, I was told that shipping will take 4 to 6 weeks, another 2 days and it would have been 6 weeks and I still have no GPS!!!

I have purchased many other items on eBay and they all take between 10 and 15 days to get to me, why must this take so long?

Good budget GPS, low on useful features.

I got this as a backup for my eXplorist 210. I should have just gotten another 210. The 300 does not have a data port, requiring you to enter coordinates by hand, and removing the ability to power the unit externally. The included Barometer is inaccurate unless you set it manually, but if you have at least 4 GPS Sat signals, it's not needed (I regularly have 7-9). Also, the compass is always off by 5-10 degrees. The only thing that seems to work as advertised is the thermometer, but I can tell if I'm cold or hot, so that's not really useful either. I like that it doesn't use a rechargeable battery...if you need more power, just pop in a pair of AA's. It's a great GPS if all you're doing is marking waypoints, but if you need a GPS for Geocaching, or to find specific coordinates, get a 210. It has MUCH more user available memory.

Basic GPS - fine make !

I looked for a low price Handheld GPS that would be water resistant (for kayaking) and would use standard batteries (2xAA). The eXplorist300 has it all.
very strong and accurate reception (incl. WAAS and ENGOS).
The only thing that would make it perfect is a PC port to down load data into navigation software.
Light weight, simple to use with basic features.

recommended.

Magellan eXplorist 300 GPS bought as gift

I bought this for my father for Christmas. He loves using it while hiking in the woods near his home in PA. He is very happy with all the features. I bought this model specifically because of the price and because it has an altimeter as a standard feature--many do not. Highly recommend it!

Magellan eXplorist 300 GPS = for the real world
Review created: 02/05/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought my 300 to take to combat. I am leaving shortly for a combat tour in Afghanistan. This model was recommended to me by men who had gone before and knew what it takes to operate in such an extreme environment. This model has the battery type that is easily resupplied in-country. The features are exactly was is needed in the area of operation and can operate at extreme altitudes and temperatures. I will be using my 300 to call in air strikes and artillery strikes on Taliban and ACF units, I think it can be used for a short hike in the woods stateside. I can provide more details when I get back, but all is good as I go forward. If you have additional questions, leave me a question and I will check my email every couple of weeks.

Incredible price for a new explorist. No regrets for buying this on ebay. Husband loved this gift that I gave him for christmas. Saw the same explorist at a sportsman store and that one was a lot more than the one I paid on ebay. I am very happy.

Nice gps. Easy to use...Nice colour. Good condition. I'd recommend this gps if you're on a budget. Compeared to the Magellan 600 this one is a little bit simpler...but for geocaching this one is perfect. Mostly this one will be used in Europe...so the basemap is wrong for Europe. But can be changed.

  Great 1st GPS
Review created: 06/30/09
by:

We picked this up for under $100 and couldn't be happier. We've gone out geocaching several times now and the unit has worked great. It's accurate, easy to use, good on batteries, and has already been dropped several times without issue. Sure, we would like to automatically download waypoints, or slip in a card with preloaded coordinates, or have detailed street maps, but what the heck - we are gettting to the exact geocahce locations (and back) as those fancier units for less than $100! An excellent buy for the money!

I love the ease of use on these GPS's. I wanted to get the 400, but found a great price on the 300, so I bought it and it has been great so far! I really recommend the Explorist models to anyone who likes to fish, hunt or just spend time out in the woods.

THEE best basic GPS for outdoor activities.....
Review created: 09/17/08
by:

Had one before (that flew off of the dashboard of my scooter after striking some elevated railroad tracks and landed on the street where it died after getting run over by 5 SUVs).

It IS monochrome, but is one of TWO of the eXplorist series (I THINK that the 600 is the other) that possesses an actual COMPASS....Great for Geocaching (compass reaaaaalllly helps with Geocaching).

PLUS, the base map set that comes with it is very expansive.....showing names of cities, lakes, towns, hamlets, airports and much more.

Simple Geocaching or hiking or fishing?? Then, there's really no need to blow a lot more money on something that hasuseless bells and whistles.....this is all you need!!

Please note....the eXplorist line is no longer manufactured!!!!!!! It has been replaced by the Triton line.

From everything I have read (and I have read a LOT of reviews!!!!).....please, stay AWAY from the Triton. See if you can dig up an eXplorist 300 or 600 somewhere on eBay or Craigslist!!

Happy hiking.....
