We love our Magellan Explorist 210. It is the perfect unit for the cost for Geocaching. It allows us to save maps 150 miles by 200 in it for all of GPSing needs for a long amount of time. We can also download Geocache coordinates with ease. We would highly recommend this unit to anyone who wants a fully functional GPS but is also budget conscious.

Nice unit when exploring new country

I moved to Missouri from Michigan last year, and was having a terrible time figuring out how the land laid. With the included software with the Magellan gps Bundle, I can now not only begin to learn the lay of the land, but see what the next ridge over looks like thanks to the 3d topo maps.
The gps is as easy as it gets to learn, and it aquires satelite even in the thickest woods. It has enough bells and whistles for anyone wanting to hunt or explore the great outdoors. You wont be sorry you bought this unit.

I have just used the Explorist 210 a few times. But I am well-pleased with it so far. It was easy to begin using and to enter the coordinates for a couple of Geocaches. It lead me to within 5 feet of one of them. The base map that comes with the unit is not real detailed. I am hoping to get either the DirectRoute software or a topo map in the future.

Magellan 210 vs Magellan SporTrac GPS
Review created: 09/03/06
by:
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Magellan 210 vs SporTrac
Pros:
Small, good display, quick to update, battery life ok, many geocache file sets, very fast usb computer connection, simple file system accessable from PC and generally easier to use.
Cons:
Geocache file sets limited to 200 caches, vs 500 on SporTrac. Documentation weak, limit on 200 caches per file is not easy to find (maybe impossible). Switching from one Geocache file to another is complicated and the current choice is not easy to determine. Caches over 200 in Geocache file are truncated and just do not appear. No indication, just missing caches.

Conclusion:
The 210 is easier to use and faster all around, it is a good step up from the SporTrac. The GeoCache feature needs work, caches should be able to be searched and deleted, like POI's. What would be great is a programming interface, so that programmers could build open source applications and enhancements. An API would allow much more functionality and sell more units too.

  GPS can save your life!
Review created: 07/05/07

After researching various GPS systems, I decided to purchase the Magellan explorist 210 with bundle. I do a fair amount of hiking, and I must say, I have gotten lost to the point of panic. Thanks to answered prayer, I'm hear to testify that conventional wisdom would recommend that mountain bikers, hikers (especially distance wilderness hikers)and backpackers do not leave home without a navigational aid other than a map.
This tool gives you topographical trails and landscapes that you upload from included software. The software alone is about $100 plus you get a clip holster and a car charger. The additional cost is about $30 for the bundle pack. The 210 doesn't have a color screen, but I haven't found it necessary on my hikes. It does have 22 MB capacity for lots of info, and comes with many features and options internally that I haven't even used yet. One feature that I especially appreciate is the backtrack option. It keeps you on the trail +/- 10 feet if you need to retrace your steps to your starting point. Pretty tough to get lost that way! Battery power lasts up to 14 hours. It also has an orange backlight for low light conditions. It is small enough to not get in the way, yet large enough to easily read the screen. A well priced item for the value, on screen details, and peace of mind it delivers.

I purchased my 210 for use in both geocaching and for work. The first one I received had a dead screen. The second one just went down with a broken on/off switch. Either I am very unlucky or the quality of the unit leaves much to be desired. I am very, very careful with the electronic equipment I own, so it is not misuse.

As far as the unit goes, ease of use, connectivity, geocaching features, all excellent. Battery usage is the only drawback, run rechargeable batteries and that takes care of the issue, requires replacement more often.

This is a nice hand held GPS for the money. This one has lots of nice features and is weather resistant - a plus for hiking. I got this for my husband for Father's Day and he has enjoyed playing with all of the features and likes the ability to download coordinates from web sites directly into the unit. I would definitely buy this again!

In my opinion electronics should not be allowed for sale on ebay without a seller guarantee of full refund for items that do not work or appear as stated , with no questions asked . Buyer can keep it or send it back .

This is a great GPS unit, works great with good power consumption for a long time on the trail. Its to bad that Magellan has discontinued this model, the model that replaced it is $100 more and burns batteries.

This thing is awesome. I love it. The detailed maps are easy to load into it from the map program once you figure it out. Routes and tracks are great fun. Who cares if the screen is color? I hunt the national forest in my state and it will load gobs of map detail - way more than you would think possible. Love it.

  Great For Geocaching
Review created: 09/24/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The 210 was my first GPSR that I purchased for geocaching. I had mine for eight months. I had left it on top of my car and lost it. I was so pleased with it, that I replaced it with another magellan model (500le). I found it very easy to use and also very durable. You can display up to 200 geocaches at a time on the unit's map. With the memory thats built in it, you can have hundreds of files, each with up to 200 caches per file, stored in the unit.
It runs on 2 AA batteries.

I have been waiting to buy one for quite some time. It does a lot that I have yet to learn, but all I really wanted it for was to mark my spots on the beach where I find seabeans. Would recommend it to anyone just wanting a unit to hike with though it did get us out of a jam on the freeway. A lot quicker then getting out the roadmap.

  Oops...
Review created: 10/07/09

It's a nice GPS but I should have studied the mapping characteristics better. The GPS came without detailed maps-- I bought topo maps for it that should work but after spending about 10 hours trying, I'm still stumped. Information on the Internet and the Magellan website (210 is unsupported) suggests the problem is with the serial number not being recognized by the map-- at any rate, putting a topo map on this thing is ruined what might otherwise be a good deal. I know from my searches that it is a common problem so buyer beware...

  magellan 210 explorist
Review created: 01/15/09
by:

Being in the market for a recreational use gps, I was aware that the explorist 210 was the least expensive unit which offered the capability to download data and upload data from a computer. The antenna is very strong and the screen lights up when waas is enabled. the accuracy is within 15 feet most of the time and the screen displays the actual amount. The keys are very easy to use, but the enter key is the same key used to move up, down, and side to side in menu and it takes some practice to make sure you dont execute incorrectly. After awhile, your finger gets used to the clicking to move about and this problem ceases to exist. This is an excellent gps unit for someone who wants an accurate and inexpensive unit for under $75.00 as I did.

Easy to use and affordable. Glad I purchased this GPS as it has been precise in all its locations and directions. The seller was honest and as a first-time buyer on E-Bay I was amazed at the ease of the whole process. Will upgrade later but am most satisfied in the here and now.
