Mildly disapointed by Magellan Trition 500

I bought the Magellan Trition 500 because it provides many features for a comparable low price. Due to this, I considered it initially a good deal.

However, my main purpose for this GPS device was to use it for geotagging.
My summary for this is: If you need a GPS device for geotagging, then don't buy the Magellan Trition!!
It has a very small logging memory.
Even so, I inserted a 1GByte SD card, the Magellan Triton 500 is not able to store the GPS track in that big memory. It only is able to store it in the tiny internal memory. If you drive by care, then this internal memory is usually full within 90 minutes!

Hence, it is not useful for geotagging!

After some time I bought an additional topo map from Magellan direct. This top map is not very useful. It provides only a minimum of information. The quality of the Maggelan topo map is very poor. I don't know if the National Geography map is better.

Well, this is all I can say about the Magellan Trition 500.

- The general features are OK (compared with the price).
- Geotagging does not work well.
- Customer support is not existing.

Pocket size, easy to use, large view screen. Base map is not very good, except at large scale. Better maps will cost $ 100.00. If you need this its worth the price.

Magellan Triton 500 Great Product .. Terrible Support

The Magellan Triton Series is an excellent GPS and ahead of its time. It is easy to use but that assumes that you have the Technical Support. Magellan Triton Tech Support is OF NO VALUE and is PRACTICALLY WORTHLESS. They use a call center in India and the people do not speak fluent English and do not understand the unit. You will spend a great deal of time waiting on the phone and the phone service is only 9 X 5 or 45 hours per week. The Jungle Ghost people are great. Located in the USA they offer 12 X 7 X 365 day tech support and are very knowledgeable. They pretest all the units and the product is ready to go when you receive it. You can look them up on the Internet.

  Too new to use

I bought the Magellan Triton 500 because everything I read said it was easy for a beginner to use. After I bought it, I discovered it doesn't yet have maps that will give auto routing AND living in MI, I would have to spend $80 for a southern Michigan National Geographic map(where I live) and another $80 for the Upper Penninsula map (where I hunt). It's now for sale at a discount without ever using it!

I agree with almost all of the other reviews, I should have read them first! I bought it because my old gps quit working. This one has almost no good information stored from the factory. It is really usless to me. I need to sell it quick and get a garmin. You can't talk to their support people!!

I HAVE A MAGELLAN MERIDIAN PLATINUM GPS,I HAVE HAD FOR A LONG TIME.IT QUIT WORKING, SO I WANTED TO BUY A NEW ONE.I BOUGHT THE MAGELLAN TRITON 500.I NEEDED A MORE DETAILED MAP FOR IT SO I PURCHASED THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TOPPO OUTDOOR RECREATION MAPPING SOFTWARE OF PA & NJ .WHEN I DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE IT WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE MY GPS UNIT.MAGELLAN'S GPS UNITS NEED TO BE MORE EASIER TO DOWNLOAD MAPS.WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER ONE.

  Best for the Money

There are better outdoor GPS units, but this unit will do everything most users will ever need. Understand that to have detailed topo or trail maps, you will need to purchase them. An alternative for some is a Magellan Crfossover GPS. It serves as a vehicle/directional GPs and a batttery operated field GPS. The drawback with the crossover is limited battery life, but it's great to be able to only buy one for vehicle and field use.

Have only used a few times, but I sure like the features and the screen is very bright. Geo-caching will be alot of fun with this unit. It seems the roads are a little off the mark (about 100 ft) if you install the upgraded topo maps that are available. Very reasonably priced for a unit with so many features.
