We already have two just like this except that they are in the colored version. The unit can be a bit complicated to work but keep at it and you will master it. We never did find a website or customer service that could assist us with questions so we ended up asking a GARMIN user. He was very helpful so apparently the units are similar.

Watch what you pay and what you are paying for!! The most updated firmwear that we have found is 5.40 version. There are units out there that are terribly out of date (even though they say they just got it, "new in box, just opened and looked at it"). Make sure you get the PC cable to go with the unit. Without that cable you are going to have to buy one to do updates.

What they don't tell you: once you get the unit you still have to get an SD card and upload the map of your choice for your area. Without this map you won't be able to find addresses. We used MapSend Direct Route North America and we've been very happy with it. By the way, unless the listing includes MapSend you have to buy that seperate also. Watch ebay listings for this too. We bought our SD cards locally. Since MapSend searchs all like addresses for all cities requested we are going to load less visited states on a separate card so it's easier to find the addres you are looking for.

Make sure you get the user manual with the unit. You can download what you need from the Magellan webiste but who wants to print out more than 100 pages.

Overall, we are very happy with the unit. There are always drawback with any unit, with this unit we found the screen hard to read at night. Of course we liked the colored version better but the Gold is a very nice unit.

  Great for the price

Great little GPS. Our first and easy to use with a little reading in the manual.
Had the most featues compared to others at the same or greater price.
If anything the only thing I dislike is the compass. It does not locate unless moving. This is explained in the manual. There are other more expensive models that have and active compass when standing still.

All in all this is a great item tell friens to buy one.

  Great GPS receiver

The only thing I can find about this unit was actually the topographic software. It's not nearly as detailed as they claim in their marketing. Very easy to import waypoints ( called projections) track/routes to your computer.

I would buy again, i would just upgrade to the newer topo software.

I purchased this Meridian Gold GPS for my son who is new to hunting because I have experience using this unit myself while hiking and hunting and it has never let me down. It is simple to operate and easy to teach first time users on how to use it. The Meridian Gold along with topo software is everything you will need for navigation even in the thickest of forests. I have had no problem locking onto satellites even during heavy cloud cover while back in the canopy of heavy timber. The unit is very accurate and can be trusted to get you where you want to go without second guessing. Battery life is excellent, something that cannot be said for the newer color models on the market today. Using this GPS has definitely opened up my hunting area and contributed to my consistent success while hunting.

  Great GPS

This is an outstanding recreational GPS. I have used it hunting and work for at least 4-5 years. The Mapsend maps are a little out of date, but this model was not made for vehicle navigation, although you can use it as such.

I have also used it at work extensively for preliminary engineering and design survey work (developing large public works projects). There is a free 3rd party software that allows you to sync with the terreserver aerial photos so you can plan or review your trips on the computer. I have just bought my second one because my first one is beginning to get worn out from use and I wanted to get another while I still could. These clearance prices are unbelievable. The reviews on newer models still indicate that color screens are hard to read in the sunlight. (DO NOT get a Meridian Color. The power consumption is WAY to significant and you cannot see the screen in the sunlight.)

  Great budget reciever

For the money one of the best recievers on the used market now since Magellan no longer sells this GPS. Pretty easy to navigate IF YOU READ THE MANUAL. Some maps are erroneous but I have seen this in complaints of all lower priced gps products. Purchasing the updated maps are necessary but the new maps are very accurate. Thales Navigation is difficult to deal with when it comes to repair, warranty work or technical questions. The key is be patient and polite on the phone with them.

Nice product, easy to use, is nice because you can put it in your pocket and it still keeps antenna reception. It is a bit bigger than most, but that also means the screen in bigger to look at your maps and tracks

Screen on this unit (with any real amount of use) tends to crash .. perm. Repair? You can purchase several reasonably priced new units for the price of the repair.

As noted above, the repair facility are really hit and miss .. usually a miss.

This is a great digital map of your location and surrounding area, also allowing you to plan trips with information of your distance, speed and ETA of your destinations. Great for hiking, mountain biking, hunting, etc. Go back to favorite places by pin pointing GPS coordinates of the best stops. Not meant for turn by turn but a great navigation device along side of your map.

This is my second Magellan Gold. It was tops in it's time. There are better out there now, but for the price this is still a great value. I had the extras to go with it already which helped. Do not feel concerned about purchasing one.

Good basic hand held, accurate GPS
Review created: 06/06/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Nice hand held GPS. I bought the GPS used and got the PC cable and cigarette lighter cable so I can download maps and use it mobile. I also purchased the mobile and bicycle mounts.

This is a basic unit with a bit more accuracy than comparable brands, but the battery life is less. It generally picks up all available satellites at maximum signal strength and even when it doesn't the accuracy is not affected.

An optional SD card can be used with the unit, but try and find any information on the capacity. These units were made and sold when 64MB was the largest available card. I have not experimented to see if it will read a full 512 Mb or higher card.

Maps software is available which greatly enhances the very basic preloaded maps.

Data entry and customization of the screens is very easy and almost self-explanatory.

I chose this GPS because I beleived I would be getting the most bang for my dollar and so far I am right. I know some people with other brands and those do not track as accurately as this one.

I gave it a good rating due to the lack of good pre loaded topo maps. Had Magellan not been too cheap to include good maps this would be an excellent rating.

Magellan Meridian Gold Handheld GPS Receiver
Review created: 05/31/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Magellan no longer make OR supports this product. If it fails (as ours did within 2 days of purchase) you can not get it fixed.

As we bought it "new" still in its manufacturer packaging, Magellan was GREAT. It took some prodding and red tape proving it was new and recently purchased but Magellan offered to replace it free of charge with a brand new Triton 400 handheld GPS.

Though disappointing that it failed us so early in its life, we are pleased with the outcome and Magellan's customer service. Because of that, we will consider their products over others in the future.

  Magellan Meridian series GPS units
Review created: 04/01/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Magellan Meridian series of GPS's are somewhat larger than the garmin extrex and the Magellan explorist series. While they may not fit as easily in your pocket, they do have larger, easier to manipulate controls, and easier to read graphics.
They also have additional/removable memory via SD cards that are commonly available, and software with topo and road maps that are compatable and usable with a home computer.
The models that I have are rugged and durable, and recieve satellite signal well, in overgrown and remote locations.
a large variety of screen information and formats on the meridian series are real virtues as well.

  Magellan Meridian Gold GPS
Review created: 12/10/07
by:
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Magellan makes a good GPS unit, the Meridian Gold is an upgrade from the one I had before. With the card you can put more maps on the machine and have more room for routes and such.
Tech support on the other hand is not good. Because this unit is a legacy unit they will not work on them any more, and you have to talk to people in some other country to get anything done. They don't even have a place on their web site to turn in a complaint and forget talking to an American about it.
So overall the unit is good and has all the features needed to get you in and out of just about anywhere you would want to go, but because the support is not there and you cannot understand what those folks are saying I will be looking at different companies if I ever decide to buy another GPS Unit

Like new conditon, absolutely spotless, much nicer than I expected, and the unit operates perfectly. Really like the larger screen than many of the older units. GPS units have become my new passion, since I bought a combo sonar/gps unit for fishing. These things are great. And LOVE the deals on E-BAY..

  My Second Magellan Gold
Review created: 09/10/09
by:
wd4h ( 290)

I bought one of these units new for $250.00 at Sam's Club about 7 years ago and laid out monitoring well sites for the County and it worked flawlessly until I left weak batteries in it and one of them leaked ruining the LCD display. I ussed it on my sailboat for years keeping me out of trouble by using the data with good nautical charts and checked the accuracy with a sextant and the Magellan coordinates were always trustworthy.
