Liner Note Author: John Tobler. Recording information: Trident Studios, London, England. MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER produced only a couple of minor hits, which may have something to do with the fact that its best songs are all five or six minutes long. But they're among the strongest songs in the entire Elton John catalog--especially the lovely opening track, "Tiny Dancer," which builds from a light, delicately melodic verse to a sweeping, dramatic chorus. Another highlight is the inscrutably biographic "Levon," whose title character was born "on a Christmas day when the New York Times said God is dead." John's luxurious piano melodies, Bernie Taupin's poetic lyrics, and Paul Buckmaster's lush string arrangements all stretch out on MADMAN, giving the record a grandiose, sweeping feel when it is not riding dark, surging currents, as on the memorably edgy title track. There is a painstaking, interior quality here that goes missing from John's early pop-song oriented albums and from the later excesses of GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. For this reason, MADMAN ON THE WATER is a crucial, unique addition to the John catalogue. | Find errors in the product description? Submit a catalog update request now. | ||||||||||||||||
Top Reviews 3 of 6 people found this review helpful. This is one of Elton John's best classic CDs. Of course the album is better with the lyrics and all that is included. The CD is a remaster and will sound better than the album due to the upgraded technology. If you find the album, good for you! A great cd for your collection. I had to get the cd version, it's been too long since I've heard one of my alltime favorite songs Razor Face. Tiny Dancer, Levon, you can get these on other albums too. I did hear Razor Face on the radio once, but it hasn't been discovered by the general listening public yet I think. It is prolly just as good as Tiny Dancer and certainly good as Levon. People just don't know it yet. I am a huge Elton John fan, but I skip over the rest of these tracks most of the time. But not every time. Review ID: 10000000002428651 Was this review helpful? Enjoyed this very same 8-Track in 1972 while attending Junior College in NoCal - but mainly this one song even though a few others hit top 40. Review ID: 10000000002065972 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 07/29/04 by: ilash -- a member of Epinions Pros: Some of the songs rank among some of the best pop songs ever! Cons: and only one (All the Nasties) is truly less-than-good! For longer than most musicians have had careers, Elton John has been putting out some of the most deplorable, inadequate music the world has ever seen. After wading through his awful eighties and nineties stuff, you would be forgiven for thinking that the man is simply incapable of putting out an album of solid, likable music that can be enjoyed by people who are not diehard fans of sickening bubble gum pop. Nonetheless, if you go far back enough to the early 1970 s you may be surprised to find some honest-to-goodness quality music released by no other than Sir Elton John. I am not entirely... Being a obsessed of that kind of music, I've always dreamt of what my life could have been if I could have lived my youth so far before (I was born on 1974...)...and every time reminds me just how great it could have been...instead of living this kind of jealousy for those who were right there seeing that Golden Age, sorted out for Bowie, Iggy Pop, Reed, Clapton, Rod Stewart and more, right in the middle of their blooming period. Among the protagonists of that era Elton John probably... His music has caught my ear since I was old enough to appreciate music and, most especially, once I was able to start buying albums. I can still remember the first time I heard Elton John while listening to a small, portable AM radio. To this day, this is one my more favorite Elton albums. Elton's "Madman Across the Water" was originally released in 1971. It was burned on CD in the early 80's, back in the early days of digital music. In 1995 it was remastered with 20 bit digital technology using the original studio... Review ID: 10000000000222774 Epinions.com ratings are not included in the item's average rating.
