These clubs are made for one thing, and one thing only: Game Improvement.

When my beat up old Northwesterns finally bit the bullet on my local driving range, (the hosel and the head of the 8 iron went through a nasty divorce), it was time to go shopping for a set of game improvement irons to help lower my 100 shot per round scores. I settled on these after trying out at least a dozen of different varieties, (boy, is there ever a lot of choices out there!).

The MacGregors are heavy headed, wide soled and has a sweet spot the size of your grandmothers Buick. They launch the ball into the flight path of small airplanes and dead straight with pretty much any kind of swing. The set is back-weighted progressively throughout the set, (the physical appearance of each club is actually different throughout), and the sole-width differs through every club as well. Perfect for the player that needs a little extra help plus a confidence boost. These clubs deliver. I can safely say that these clubs played a major part in making the game fun for me, and as such helped me lower my score into the eighties over the past two seasons.

Don't expect to draw and fade these irons at will though. They are not designed for that kind of game. High and straight is the order of the day, and the clubs will fight back if you try and change what they are programmed for. If you are looking to shape shots with your irons, check out another set that I have reviewed here on eBay.

Get these to improve your game and lower your score while having fun with it. It's what the M455's are made for.

Outstanding set of irons that are SO easy to hit. Great looks the inspire confidence. Extremely under-rated due to limited marketing effort from the manufacturer. From a playability perspective, these clubs and the Cleveland TA-06's / Launchers, are probably the most impressive and easiest to hit clubs I've hit for mid- to high-handicappers. Bottom line, for the money, I rate these MacGregors and the Clevelands as the best used clubs on the market for players with average to below average skills.

I've been playing MacGregor Cavity back forged irons for a couple of years. I switched from Callawy X12s to the MacGregor irons originally because the feel was so sweet when you hit that solid shot. I hoped the improved feed back would help my game in the long run, but the forgiveness was just not there. On miss hits the ball usually flew straight, but not far... so I ended up hitting a lot of shots short. I decided I needed new irons. I wanted to keep the feel of forged, but I realized that I also needed the forgiveness of cast. The MacGregor M455 has more than met that goal. When you look down on the club at set up, it just looks easy to hit and when you swing...it keeps that promise. On my first round at my local club with my new irons at hole #3... a short par 3 over water ... a hole I know well and have come to fear. I set up with my normal iron ( an eight )...made my swing and immediately got that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach...Thin. I watched with delight as the ball soared over the water and landed softly on the middle of the green, WOOHOO !!!
I'm a 19 handicap who normally hits about 10 of 14 fairways and 2 of 18 greens. My iron game needed a lot of help and the M455 is makin a difference. In my last four competitive rounds I've shot 89 - 88 - 95 (tried a new driver) and 86 . I'm hitting a lot more greens than I ever have and discovered I can even hit a four iron with confidence something I've never done since I started playing this game we all love/hate.
I'm so happy with the M455 that I bought a 6 iron in the Ladies version for my girl friend to try. I recommend the MacGregor M455 to anyone who wants to improve their game and enjoy the game a little more.

  Best club out there...

These clubs feel great when you hit the ball. The pro at the range tried to convince me to buy his custom made clubs vs. the Macgregor's. They looked great, but when I hit them they sounded clucky and felt the same. I played about 10 different types of iron sets at the local pro shop. I kept coming back to the MacGregor's. What was even better yet, I found a used graphite set on E-bay at a great price. The graphite feels even better than the steel and carries a higher resale value. Shots are straight and lofty. I've only hit them twice so far, but am very happy. The look and feel of these clubs is great. I can keep these for a long, long time.

I was skeptical buying golf clubs on line even though the descriptions matched
my swing. I am very pleased with the clubs. They were in perfect condition,
arrived well wrapped and on time. I could not of expected anymore.
thanks, Wally Dale

  MacGregor irons M455

I am a club addict. I need help. My handiccap is 12, I am 64. I buy a set of irons once a month. I am always looking for forgiveness , a soft feel, and a larger than normal head so I don't miss hit them. These MacGregor M455 out performed my new Callaway 2006 Big Bertha's, my Mizuno 2007 MX 25's, my Mizuno 2006 MP 60's, and my Taylor Made 2007 R7's. Now they don't even make these MacGregors anymore. Go figure. Jay Suverkrup, DMD in Sarasota, Fl.

My wife loved her Valentine day gift! And with the warm "winter" season we have been having, a trip to the driving range was much earlier than expected. This is her first matched set of irons that was not a starter set. We both saw a 15 to 20 yard increase in length and better direction control. We both shoot in the low 100's, but now I think she has the advantage.

  Forged V-Foil Macgregors

Got these with stiff flex graphite shafts. The shafts allow for a nice penetrating ball flight and though the weighting of the clubhead gets the ball easily up in the air, it does not balloon on you. I highly recommend these with steel or stiff shafts. I also have a set of Mactec NVG Midirons and really like these clubs as well. They have a very solid feel when you hit them and they are also very forgiving. They are also some of the longest irons I've played.
Handicap 6-7ish....hit driver 270ish....pw..125 yds...8iron...155....5iron...185.

I had been looking for these clubs locally as a friend has a set and I really liked the way they felt when I tried them. I found these on E-bay and ordered them immediately. They came within two days and were in excellent condition, exactly what I wanted and the price was very reasonable. I will continue to use Ebay to search for clubs that I may not be able to find locally and also to price match. I was very satisified with the purchase.

The clubs were as described. My dad was thrilled to get something he could otherwise never afford. He's like a kid with a new toy. I am grateful I found these for him. Just...perfect. So thank you.

I bought these clubs for my 13 year old daughter and after a little practice she is hitting them great. They are very forgiving clubs and she should get many years of use out of them.

  MacGregor V-Foil M455 Iron set, left-handed, used
Review created: 12/02/07
by:

I was searching for a set of irons for my Son, who is a beginning golfer and is left-handed. The MacGregor M455 forged irons are not manufactured anymore, but are a very high-quality product. I found the iron set on EBAY, and the pictures looked like the clubs were in great shape. I was pleased to win the bid, at what I felt was a very good price, and was very happy to see that the irons were in excellent shape upon inspection of the product upon receipt. My Son is very happy with his new clubs, and I'm sure it will benefit his game improvement.

  Buy the McGregor M455's
Review created: 08/20/07

Why does everyone point to the big name clubs? Status? Whatever it is, these clubs are, for the price and performance one of the best. I've bought many iron sets on eBay, from Callaway, Taylormade and Ping. Quite frankly, the M455's were equal to or better than most of them. The long irons are similar to using hybrids. The rest of the set is long and true. Granted, these are a bit bulkier, but results are what counts. These are excellent game improvement irons.
