For years MTV's 120 Minutes has provided a conduit through which genuinely interesting musical acts can find their way onto the airwaves. Long a weathervane for alternative music, the program also premieres live performances by many of tomorrow's superstars. MTV 120 MINUTES LIVE culls some of the finest performances from their archives.
Oasis kicks off the proceedings with their trademark swagger on their early ("early" meaning pre-global conquest) "Supersonic." PJ Harvey offers a sparse, energetic rendition of "Hey Billy." Looking further back, the album also features a chaotic version of the Violent Femmes' "Kiss Off" and a re-united Sex Pistols, whose "Pretty Vacant" is not only surprisingly passionate but true to form--Lydon takes a moment or three to curse about the sound mix. Weezer and Bad Religion rip through high volume versions of their hits, while Radiohead finishes things off with a take of "Fake Plastic Trees" that's lush and furious, at once spontaneous and spot-on.
