Luther (DVD, 2004)

I loved this movie when it was first released! It gives an accurate, and not too sugar coated feel of the reformation movement. Although obviously from a Protestant slant, you begin to understand the devastating consequences of the Protestant movement as it shifts from a journey of faith of one man to a political movement. In too many writings, Luther is held up as a saint...here we see him as just a man acting on his faith. Recommend for not only those wanting to understand the roots of the Protestant faith, but also history buffs who want to understand the religious wars of Europe and the New World!

superb casting, costumes, music. I was suspicious, re: a new version of a classic old movie, but I was wrong. Couldn't have been done better.

This movie gives great insight into the life of Martin Luther. It has great historical value and depicts what Martin Luther stood for in the world of religion and the Church.

Martin Luther is a true example of servant leadership. In a time when human life is not cherished and the thoughts of giving yourself up for the sake of someone else, Martin Luther proves what it means to truly be committed to Christ.
In a society that balks at any type of authority and screams that all are to be free, we are the most insecure society ever. With true freedom comes responsibility, and we want no part of that.
A man of God, a true hero. If only the men of today would rise up and follow the example. To be true spiritual heads of their household answering to Christ for their words, their deeds and their actions. Taking seriously their committment to family and home.

This movie is truth centered and documents the reformation following the life of Martin Luther. This is probably the most important event in church history since 380 AD when the emperor made Christianity the religion of Rome. This is an event that the church should commemorate to this day as this is when the truth was restored to a corrupt church. I don't think there has been an event since that has had as much significance on the church as the reformation.

The movie is pretty accurate and dramatic. The drama is a little over done at times, but keeps the action going. This movie is better than any I've seen on the reformation. There's a lot in the life of Martin Luther that it doesn't tell about, but it does cover the events of the reformation pretty well. Joseph Fiennes does a great job portraying Luther, Peter Ustinov does an excellent job portraying Frederick of Saxony. This is a good family film, and a must for any serious Christian to see.

This was a wonderful movie. Historically accurate, beautifully filmed and acted, a true joy to watch. The only down side to this was there were no big explosions... ;) If you enjoy high quality movies, you will enjoy this one.

This was the best movie ever produced about the early church that I have ever sceen. I watch it atleast 3 times a year and it still gives me passion about my Saviour JC!!

I consider this film a must for a home video library. The historical accuracy of Martin Luther's life story is accompanied by a likewise excellent portrayal of the world he lived in. I found the casting to be of particular satisfaction . . . Joseph Fiennes made a striking figure, and he portrayed this monumental role in a passionate, yet sensitive manner. I was impressed by the many small details that were included that are of great importance. If I disliked anything about this film, I would confess it . . . however, I was completely pleased by it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Very well made movie. Loved the clothing. Good acting. If one does not know history of Martin Luther and the reformation, it would be hard to follow who is who. Movie was recommended to us.

Every Christian, regardless of his “branch,” needs to have an appreciation of the roots of Protestantism and its birth, the Reformation. This movie will serve well as an introduction to the devout practitioner as well as the casual inquirer. Although it is a dramatization, it is generally historically accurate it keeps the viewer involved in the intrigues of the religious – political dynamics of the day in a way that a documentary could not. The acting is appropriate and convincing with Joseph Finnes doing an excellent portrayal of Luther and memorable tableau role by Peter Ustinov who steals the show. There is surely some poetic license in the development of the characters, but none so far-fetched so that it compromises the integrity of the story.

Some will see the movie as anti-Roman Catholic. Actually, it’s a frank and fair look at the Catholicism of the times and should add to the appreciation of how the Protestant Reformation contributed to the integrity of Catholic Church of today. After all, it was Luther’s intention to reform his church and he succeeded in many ways.

this is one of the best christian movies yet!! someone from my church rented it for me and i watched it. i liked it so much i got one for myself and one for the church. i am getting another one for someone else at the church. would recommend it to anyone

Good historical accounting of Martin Luther's life. Great for the library. Best watched with the closed captioning on, due to the dialect is difficult to hear.

Everyone should take the time to SEE this..! The color is beautiful! Frederick the Wise and his excellent humor (facial expressions) added alot to the story!

I love true historical stories that spell out the facts.

This story shows what leavels that the Catholic Church was willing to stoop to in the name of power and money at that time in history as well as their lack of devine guidence.

I believe Luther to be a Saint of his time, willing to die rather than avoid the truthfulness of the Gospel, thus opening the doors to the religious freedom.

This movie helps convinces me of the nessesity of the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I think its a movie all should see to have a better understanding and perspective Of the histoical facts that lead to this movment.

I debated on seeing this; however love Christian movies and especially heroes of the faith. Luther writing "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"..which wasn't mentioned in the movie is a song that movies Christians especially in times of persecution to focus on Christ and reach out to others for Him..
We are saved thru grace and not of works least any man should boast..When Luther nailed the 95 Theis on door in Wurtemburg..He nailed it all..the core of Gospel of Christ....I really liked this movie...

I bought this movie because several members of my church had recommended it as a "must see". It details the life of Martin Luther and the struggles he faced in getting the Bible translated into English so that the common man could read the Word of God for himself. If you are a Christian and you enjoy learning some of the church's history, you will probably enjoy this movie.

This is a great movie for those wanting good historical drama concerning what christians had to go through.

Inspirational story of Martin Luther and his seperation from the Catholic Church. He truly was a servant of God and a man of his convictions who, though persecuded, never faltered from his beliefs. Great acting and cinematography with a very moving story.

We have rented this DVD twice and have watched it about 8 times.Now I want to own it and show it company we have over.
The quality of the acting is *****- by all the actors and actresses.
The cinematography and pathos exqisite and delighful, interesting, and engaging.
The music is beautiful.
The historical value is mostly accurate.
Yes, some poetic license but that makes it more interesting.
I thank God for the Reforamtion and for Martin Luther's courage and tenacity contributing to my relgious freedom!

The movie retraces how Martin Luther was the starting point of the religious liberty we now enjoy, especially in the USA, but that we will lose in a very near future. The book "The Great Controversy" is an excellent follow-up of the movie.

The film is not a true epic as titled, but does give a very good account of the events of Luther's later life when he decides that something must change in the church. This film is great for a teaching tool.

This is a great movie, moving and entertaining. I was really surprised and would highly recommend it. Also provides a good understanding for an important part of history.

Luther on DVD is one of the most outstanding pictures of all times. The actor Joseph Fiennes was truly remarkable in his portrail of the monk Martin Luther.
All of the actors were outstanding. I purchased this for a freind so that he would stop borrowing my copy. He could not stop watching the soul stirring epic come to life. If you want to know the truth get this DVD and be enlighten!!!!!!!
