The sixth release by Sam Rosenthal's "band" continues his unique melding of subtly caressing, velvety electronics with pearlescent guitars and searching, ruminative vocals. Rosenthal's grasp of the poignant and the gothic is nothing short of remarkable; BTFABG's music is deeply probing, honest, and--for the most part--bereft of any superficial affectations.
Musically, Rosenthal's deft expertise at the keyboards and other obtuse devices is provocative. His compositions, although cut from the same huge cloth of melancholy he has always woven, are beautifully written and stand well above similar sounds devised by his antecedents in the 4AD camp. THIS LUSH GARDEN WITHIN is austere psychotherapy of the first order.
