Considering Melissa Etheridge's reputation as an exceedingly dynamic on-stage presence, many fans might consider the release of LUCKY LIVE (her first concert album) long overdue. In keeping with Etheridge's trademark rough-and-ready sound, the disc is a no-frills rock & roll celebration of raging guitar, thick bass, and pounding drums, with all the grit left in. Though sometimes accused of substituting vocal bombast for emotion, Etheridge here manages to imbue her powerhouse performances with an often spine-chilling passion. The crowd is clearly hanging on her every word, and often erupts into spontaneous mid-song applause. Most of the 14 songs here are from the LUCKY studio album, but are performed with such joyous, Springsteen-esque intensity, the record never seems redundant. Particular highlights include "When You Find the One," which recalls Bob Seger at his moody NIGHT MOVES best, and the anthemic, wah-wah-guitar-drenched "Giant," which chalks one up for the underdog in a manner to which just about everyone can relate.
