Album Notes
Lemonheads: Evan Dando (vocals, guitar); Jesse Peretz (bass); David Ryan (drums).
Singer-songwriter-guitarist Ben Deily and bassist Jesse Peretz left the Lemonheads just as the Boston pop-punkers were signing to Atlantic, with the result that the band became what it would remain for the rest of its life: a vehicle for Evan Dando and whoever else was in the room at the time. 1990's LOVEY couldn't have sounded less like the band's debut, 1987's HATE YOUR FRIENDS.
The proto-Green Day pop-punk of that album is gone, replaced by the sort of alternately winsome and weird pop sensibility which would flower with the Lemonheads' next release, 1992's commercial breakthrough IT'S A SHAME ABOUT RAY. In fact, much of LOVEY, recorded almost solo with minimum help from friends like Juliana Hatfield, sounds like Dando getting some of the weirdness out of his system--witness the inexplicable opener "Ballarat"--before catchy, mainly acoustic songs like "Stove" and "Half the Time" became his usual style.
