Actually titled with one of those hearts you see on t-shirts and bumper stickers, I LOVE MEKONS is an utterly delightful album that makes the title a self-fulfilling prophecy. Something of a concept album examining various perversions of the concept of love, the album can be appreciated as an ironic statement about the lyrical obsessions of pop music, a theoretical examination of social constructs, or a damn fine pop album.
At its best, it's all three at once; witness the brilliant opening track, "Millionaire," which is as arch and melodic as the Magnetic Fields, but with a noisier rock & roll heart. Elsewhere, the thumping "Wicked Midnite" and the sly "Dear Sausage"--the best metaphor song since XTC's "Pink Thing"--match the edgy lyrics with tougher-sounding music than anything the band have done since their early postpunk days. For those needing an entry into the Mekons' large and confusing oeuvre, you couldn't go wrong here.
