For Love of Evil by Piers Anthony (1996, Paperback, Reprint)

The sixth book of the Incarnations of Immortality series is an excellent read, full of twists. In this book, Satan, the Father of Lies, is the subject. The first half of the book provides a solid foundation of the nature of the main character, Parry, and how he assumes the office of the Incarnation of Evil. Piers Anthony goes to great lengths to differentiate between a good character perfoming the duties of an office to punish evil and an evil character performing evil acts. The second half of the book is mostly concerned with describing encounters with other Incarnations (described in previous books in the series) from Satan's perspective. Fans of the series can expect a few twists in the story line. Once again, a hint for new readers: read this series in order! The sixth volume is my second favorite of the series.

of the seven books in this series, this one was head and shoulders above the rest. From Parry wooing Jolie, to her murder, his flight and life of hiding, vengeance long denied, then his corruption and fall from grace Mr. Anthony kept the story flowing. He also did an excellent job in tying this one character into the previous five books before moving on to his finale of the series.
