I give Peter Jackson a lot of credit for even attempting to take on a challenege as huge as LOTR. I think he has succeded wonderfully in the special effect and production design department; his WETA team has created some ground breaking CGI and the attention to detail on every single set and costume is truely amazing.
The first time I watched the trilogy I loved it, mainly because the images on the screen were so amazing and I did not know what was going to happen since I hadn't read the books. After you watch the whole trilogy and find out that Frodo does indeed complete his mission, the films lose almost all of their tension and suspense the second time you watch them. This is obviously the case with a lot of action/suspense movies that have a big climax, but I have watched many of those other movies (Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Aliens, Star Wars) multiple times and still find them very entertaining. LOTR is lacking that extra something that the other films have that prevent it from being truely great. I think Peter Jackson maybe tried to blend too mnay genres into one, trying to combine fantasy and action with drama and romance, the latter two really slowing down the story at times. I know he was trying to stay as close to the books as possible and not just turn it into an action flick, it just didn't work for me.

If you are dead set on buying the trilogy, then I do reccommend you get the extended editions instead of the theatrical release. Some of the extra scenes are cool, and they do fill in a few gaps in the story. The video bitrate is much higher than the theatrical version, buyers who have a HDTV will notice a difference. FYI: A new extended edition is planned for release on HD-DVD later this year, if you really want the best HD quality wait for that.

This is the best DVD series you can get.It has many many scenes that were not shown in thearters or on other editions. This the ultimate pack of DVD's. There is so much extra footage of the movie each one comes with 4 disks- 2 for the movie and 2 for extra's. This will keep you watching for a week straight.

Finally--everything tied together...the missing pieces of the story restored...more on the love stories, the back stories...everything. This is the DVD set to have...the extended editions are the only way to go if you want the complete story. Too bad they couldn't have put this in the theatre...guess they don't trust the viewers to sit through a truely great story told the way it should have been told...and not cut for length.

The Lord of the Rings Extended cut trilogy, is AWESOME! This contains all three extended movies. It is really good! Peter Jackson did great directing this trilogy! With great actors such as: Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood and Sean Astin this is not a trilogy to miss!

I love this movie since it came out in 2001, I love the whole story and its characters, the music is beautifl, I really love the way Peter Jackson directed the movie, he really captured Tolkien's spirit in the movie. It 's just a wonderful piece of work. Love it.

I normally don't go for these types of films, however after hearing so many great things I had to see it. Simply fantastic! Fantastic story line & easy to follow. The trilogy set has so many extra worth watching features such as how certain things were filmed, removed scenes, etc. I would say this ranks up there with the "Force" films from the late 70's to early 80's.

i am very happy that i was able to find these movies on e-bay, as i had been wanting to see them in the extended editions because i had heard that it was like watching a whole new movie, and i was not disapointed

Short of pouring over every single word Tolkien ever wrote about Middle Earth...which I am in the process of doing, by the way...these 12 DVDs give a much greater depth and understanding to what is depicted on the screen in the 3 LOTR movies. Even with the extended editions of the movies, I, as a thorough LOTR fan, always wanted to know even more about the story, characters, location, etc. etc. and this was like the answer to my prayers. In addition to the extended versions of the theatrical releases, the twelve discs in the set are completely loaded with hours of additional information and insights such as cast and director commentaries and production notes. Beyond that, I just really enjoyed the chance to see more of the wonderful costumes and sets, the inspired music, the sheer beauty of the New Zealand landscape used in these movies. There are many scenes added back into the mix that were deleted when the theatrical releases were edited, and other scenes that did make the final cut were enhanced with more info and more clarity. I recommend this set to anyone who cannot seem to get enough of Middle Earth, as well anyone who wants to gain an understanding and appreciation of what really goes into the making of movies such as these.

Let me tell you why you should own the Lord of the Rings. The first thing that comes to mind is the word GLORIOUS. This trilogy encompasses everything in the world that is good: honor, glory, passion, strength, will, power, friendship, loyalty, courage... and the list goes on and on. I don't need to waste your time, I think you get the idea. It is definitely worth buying the extended edition to get all the amazing scenes that didn't make it to theaters as well as the other goodies that comes with. Plus the dvd boxes look pretty sweet. Overall, it is a wise investment and a fantastical experience.

The Extended Edition of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is without a doubt the best way to enjoy these stories. The added scenes are seamlessly woven into the movie and are no less quality than the theater version, and add much more depth and authenticity towards J.R. Tolkien's books. Along with the extended movies, there is loads of bonus features including background interviews and documentaries covering the making of the movie: commentary, actors, script, location, sets, costumes, weaponry, and computer graphics and more. There is days of entertainment and information in this set, and it is well worth the investment.

Overall this is a fantastic DVD set and comes from quite a reputable seller ( check out his/her reviews).

The condition of the individual boxes they came in were like-new. With the stickers still on them from the original store (mine had Best Buy stickers on them).

There were two or three very small surface, hair line, light scratches. I want to make it clear that even though they were slightly visible, they in no way impacted the viewability and there were no skips or interruptions in movie-play.
And with 12 discs the fact that there were only those few light scratches was great.

The extra scenes on the DVD's are great, too. A must-have set for the serious LOTR fan. Lots of bonus stuff there as well.

The 2 things that I didn't like were:

1. My DVD's came in the individual box cases and DID NOT include the gray-ish colored box that holds ALL THREE sets, as seen in the discription picture on that items page.
I thought that using a "stock photo" was slightly misleading when that didn't come with it but for the value it was a small thing.

2. The shipping cost was somewhat high. I paid $15 for shipping and for that it arrived in about a week, maybe a day less.

I've seen similar INDIVIDUAL box sets (i.e not 1, 2 & 3 together but being sold separately) for $75 apiece.
Now, I love LOTR but I'm not going to pay $225 plus tax for the 3 sets (which are what you get here, all three of them).

So even with the shipping being what it was I still paid less for these three plus shipping than what I would have paid for 1 set in a store.

Great bargain, perfect condition DVD's, and a trusted seller.

Unless you like wasting money to drive to the store to buy the overpriced DVD's that you could get for 1/4 of the price online and still have money left over to buy more box sets of great shows... But that's just me. <smile>

My husband, who rarely gives me gift suggestions, asked for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy for Christmas this year. I was able to get this for him on ebay and of course, I have yet to open or view it. It is perfectly packaged and ready to wrap for Christmas.

A couple of weeks agi I bought her the DVD's thet were shipped within a reasoable amount of time and the postage waw fair and they were securely packed. Upon receipt I insspected the DVDs and they were in great condition. I would reccommend this site to anyone.

We loved it. the Extended scenes were great! we loved the written guides included so we could see where the extra material was. We are so glad we bought it!

I love that the extended editions have so many more scenes that the theater version as well as extended scenes! I'm sooo excited!

This item was exactly what I was looking for. The Item came in good condition (With the Slipcover) and in a real timely manor.

After seeing the blu-ray version of The Lord of the Rings on Amazon, I decided to buy the DVD version while I wait for the extended version of the blu to be released (who knows when). Long-time fan of the trilogy. This edition is off-the-wall. It is totally worth it.

I liked the boxes they came in and generally liked the movies but as in all movies that were originally books there were some disappointments like leaving out Tom Bombadil. Overall they are very good movies and follow the books pretty well.
