Commentary on the Human Condition

I remember when I was 9 or 10 I saw Lord of the Flies for the first time. Needless to say, it left a deep impression on me. For the first time I realized the potential in human beings, the necessity for order and rules, the ruthlessness of bullies and the kindness of good and true friends.
This is the story of a group of military school boys who survived a plane crash and were stranded on a tropical island. The all for one and one for all spirit quickly left and a division into two groups was made between the boys. You watch how power, control and ruthlessness take over one group of children - the hunters - while the other smaller group try to remain within reason, and struggle against the elements and the stronger hunters. The eye opening reality -- that this very well could be the course a real situation (similar to the one depected in this film) could take -- is rather frightening.
I think this is a good movie for middle school students (maybe younger these days??) to watch with thier parents so that they can think about the situations protrayed in the film, whether they are good/bad/right/wrong, what they would do, who they would be friends with, and what they think of how things are being handled. It's a great discussion piece - take the opportunity to watch this with your (pre)teens and find out what they're thinking - you could learn a lot! You'll also enjoy the movie, too.
